Here are some pictures that I took today at the Oceanside Pier (Oceanside, California). Some of the waves were pushing 20 feet...some of the biggest to ever hit San Diego County.

Good set of pics!
I was just going to ask if anyone was headed out that way.
I'm going to close my shop for a bit and head down for a "few" shots. I'm allowed to play hookey once in a while. |

On the phone right now trying to locate a ND gradient filter before I hear out.
La Jolla, Crystal Pier or Oceanside beware - I'm on my way!
Woo Hoo - ND4 gradient in stock - Poofs!

Wow those are some great shots! I wonder if they are crashing like that up by me. Santa Cruz, Ca. Maybe I'll see someone surfing those monsters |

I grew up near Santa Cruz. Except for Mavericks, I never really saw any giant waves like these...but I've heard this swell is going all the way up the coast. If you get any good shots, post them!

You didn't make it up to Pacifica while you lived in Santa Cruz? It's just north of Half Moon Bay. With decent storms the waves scrape the bottom of the fishing pier. With good storms they top it. Pretty impressive looking when you consider how high it is above normal surf height. |

Great shots you guys! I took a few at lunch today, but was in a hurry and they aren't that great.
We've seen face heights in the 20 foot range around here (Santa Barbara).
From what I have heard, SoCal got good waves, NorCal got the size, but stormy conditions.
More big stuff is on the way in the next week, keep snapping away at the beach! |

Chafer
you, BradP and I should get together one of these days and hang out.
Brad I can't believe you went without me!!!!
I went and got a few shots of the lifeguards hauling someone out of the surf on a jet ski. I was mainly shooting the crowds for the local paper. Trying for that personal angle. I shot a few decent wave shots but after the lifeguard episode I had to hurry back and make deadline. If anyone wants to go Friday PLEASE call me I would love to go back for pleasure shots.

:( Was a spur of the moment thing kinda. I wanted to go, but didn't know if I could hold 2 cars over for the next day or not until about 2PM. (parts weren't available until today anyway) Short notice mad rush to get there. |

Just a quick sequence of auto-level kinda' edits:

I had thought about using the big crashing one in the Oops! II Challenge, sort of a "Look out for that! - eh nevermind..." kinda submission. Nah. |

Here are a couple of photos I took yesterday in Morro Bay. The waves were certainly impressive. I just wish I was a good enough photographer to really capture their size.

If these big guys are headed north, does anyone know if they are calling Mavricks? Early in the season for it but these are big swells, if it hit up here, Mavricks will be booming. |

I don't know if they've called an event at Mavricks, but these waves are certainly bone crushers if anything goes wrong.
Here is a mavericks web site, but it looks like their webcam is down at the moment. It probably a server issue more than a camera issue.

I've been following the surf forecasts and thus far, Mav's has been too stormy. It seems to have really been South of SLO where it has been best.
I shot some local ones yesterday, swell a bit smaller but still slammin. I need to go through them and clean them up and I will post a few.
(I also got out in it for about 2 hours and I am pretty tired and sore today!)
jahoward - the second one from Morro is a neat shot! It is hard to show the size of waves without something for reference in the shot. |

Nice pics guys! The surf is one of the few things that I miss from California. Flocks of hot chicks in skimpy bikinis is another. Got any pics of those? :)

Wow cycleboy, you were brave enough to go out there eh? My tail went between my legs when I saw those waves. Any good rides? How beat up are ya? Post your pics when you get a chance.

Here is another one I took. This shows some people about to get soaked by a wave.

Yep, I jumped in for about 2 hours. It was "only" down to head high w/ overhead sets! I was pretty tired out after and sore calves from kicking (did I mention I am a sponger?). I got some great rides though, well worth the difficulty of paddling out.
On the 29th, we took a drive up Hwy 1 towards Big Sur. Biggest waves I have seen in person! Face heights I would guess nearing 25+ feet? I took some photos, but they don't show the size very well w/ nobody on them for reference. I am working on a few and will post when they are edited. |
