My son has been making animation shorts and asked me if I knew of any sites that have animation challenges for amateurs like DPC does for digital photography. Anyone?

Depends how old. The best site like that is probably //www.newgrounds.com but it's not exactly workfriendly. (if you're kid is 10, 12, maybe 15, forget it)

Did a quick search for you and this seems to be an animation competition site which is much like dpc is for photographers.

WOW, that's a little advanced for me. I mean, I can make it snow, rain, have waterfalls move, people dancing, dogs bowing, LOL...but I can't make cartoon animations like THAT! LOL...
