Yes, you need to have shallow DOF to create Bokeh, but I was expecting more delineation of the DOF in the pictures. Maybe the 2nd half of the entries I review will have more DOF represented in the pic's (at least my view of Shallow DOF).
Is anyone else seeing this, or is it just me? |
That is utter crap dude.
Completely over analysing the whole thing, if someone used both, they still have shallow DOF, period. That's all the challenge called for so, IMO if they got good bokeh in also, then you should score HIGHER not lower because of it for an added element beyond what the challenge called for, but still in the guidelines. |
Ha, whoooooops, looks like I ticked someone offâ€Â¦ :-) Sorry if my view of the world offended you, dude!
Seriously, bokeh and shallow DOF go hand in hand, so if someone entered a picture of a bird on branch with outstanding bokeh, but every part of the bird (from its beak to its tail) was in perfect focus, you got a 5 from me, as you did meet the challenge. Now, if you found a more creative way to use shallow DOF to draw attention to your subject, you potentially scored higher.
As for "over analyzing", I don't know how else to go through 347 entries and subjectively rate them with some meaning, without thinking about my interpretation of the challenge and applying some criteria for voting. IMO, it's a disservice to those who have entered and take this challenge seriously if I just go through and say "oh, isn't that a pretty picture, 10". Like others on this site, I am looking for critical and poignant feedback on how people interpret my pictures, thus I feel the responsibility to respond in kind.
Why have a Bokeh challenge and two Shallow DOF challenges if the criteria is the same? |

To me there is a real difference between Shallow DOF and Bokeh and that is the way I approached the challenge. After all, like what has been stated, there has been a bokeh and SDOF challenge. But them again WTF do I know, my score sucks! |

Maybe it's just me but don't you think that a discussion on what is considered shallow depth of field, and what is considered aceptable is best conducted prior to or following the voting period. Seems to me that there are some who think that by sharing their opinion enough, they may, just may sway some voters into their way of thinking... just a curiosity here... :) |

Good point. Wasn't intentional on my part. In reality, I highly doubt anyone is going to be "swayed" by this conversation, but I can see your perspective - this conversation would be better served in a different thread at a different time. Thanks. |

So by that meaning, if I'm in the From the Ground Up challenge, and I used just too much Perspective within my picture, then I'm in the srong because I'm combining challenges.
The point of the challenge is to specifically use one tool. If you happen to use another tool on top of that, it probably means you've donea better job that just someone who only used one tool.
Seriously, does that mean I can't use High Contrast? or Long Exposure? or any other of the possible compositional elements?
Color? Black and White? Landscape? Macro?
Do you get my point yet?

wavelength - got your point the first time, and I don't disagree, as long as BOTH tools are used effectively. |

Okay Brad whatever! :)
I put in a request to drop the second "B" or to make it lower case "Brenb".
Edited to say I now have a new username. I'm now Brenb :)

what is Bokeh.
i never get comments arrrrrrgh well usually not ones explaining what i need to do to fix problems that is.
i'm actually painting this picture and it will sell for a lot but i can't get a score over 4.8 someone tell me what i'm doing wrong.....besides taking these pics with a hunk of junk, hand me down camera.
i'm so frustrated my kid takes better photos than i do but she paints abstract so i guess with her there are no rules maybe. |

YUCK! People can't possibly think this is worse than my garbage entry! I've hit an all time low! YIKES! LOL....I have to think this is just a very subjective contest to vote on. I found it hard myself, but there is NO way my photo deserves this score. It just has to get at least back above a 5! WHEW! BAD VOTERS, BAD BAD VOTERS! LOL....

Really? I didn't know that. Then it seems like a LOT of entries are bokeh then, and not Shallow DOF. Hmmmmmm

oh well ... here comes some more beating from the voters :P
I am not doing bad so far (considering I don't like the shot myself too much) swaying at 5.6+ with 12 comments, you can see something is really wrong when there are many comments and an alright score. |
