I had a comment on a picture that said "looks flat" and I was wondering if someone could tell me what that meant?

Flat means lack of contrast. In this particular case, it may not have enough black and dark to 'pop' If you have Photoshop or PSP try adding +5 contrast.. see if YOU like it better.

In this case, the endpoints look OK, but there's not a lot of variation among the midtones which predominate.
IF you want more contrast in the midtones, the two approaches I usually try first are:
1. Apply an S-shaped tone curve, with the middle tones steeper than the highlights/shadows. See some (near) examples in this pBase Gallery
2. Use "Contrast-enhancing UnSharp Mask" by applying the USM filter with something close to the following settings (for a DPC-sized image):
Amount: 16%
Diameter: 64 pixels
Threshold: zero |

he may have meant perspective and depth of field, rather than the contrast being flat.
if the pov was lower to the track, with more of the track out of focus it would feel like there was more space. As it is, the f/11 aperature keeps most of the frame sharp. |
