There is a group of folks over at FM that are trying to have a GTG in Pittsburgh or there abouts in early jan 06. Since some of them are also here, active or lurking, i thought i'd mention it here as well.

Proposal is Phipps Conservatory or the National Aviary on Sunday Jan 8 - indoor locations due to the fact it's winter!

The thread there if you want to chime in.

I'm interested. Not a member at FM but if anyone from here is going/wants to go another time, please keep me posted.

You don;t have to be an FM'r to come. Some of us are members both places (dpaull formerly deapee, lykofos has popped up from obscurity as well).

Looks to be nearing 10 folks, and those interested can meet before hand for a bite to eat and socialize. (Site TBA on the eating bit)

Weather permitting, we have folks traveling 4 hours to come!

Emmanual (an FM'r) will be there with his 1Dmk2n and Canon 500 4.5L monster (i got to see it..it is dressed in camo for wildlife work, but WOWsers, what a biggie). That 1D in drive mode is something to hear - 8.5 FPS! Nice combo, but at $8000 it better be! I'm trying to get him over here, but not succeeding so far - he'd be a sure ribboner so perhaps i should discourage him? LOL

Mav- how far up in NY are you? Is Erie PA or something like 1/2 way?

UPDATE:

Meeting at the Aviary at about 9am on the 8th.
those interested can meet at the Eat N Park on Rt 65N in Bellevue at 8am.

It looks like 15-20 people, 5 from WVa in including some pro (most PJs, one i think is the governor's photog).

Should be a great time - all are invited, please RSVP as we are probably going to be getting a group admission and will need a count of heads.

I would love to go to PA for GTG but you guys are just too far. Let me know when there is one on west side of PA.

One last bumpity bump for those looking for something to do this weekend. To help you from reading the whole thread:
A photo GTG at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday at 9:30 am or so. Mention you are part of the Fred Miranda group to get the discount rate.

Fot them that might care, the Steeler game is away and at 4:30 so you won't miss it.

DPCrs will be there too - dpaull, me and epphoto (new here) and maverick and possibly lykofos.

West side? That must be a typo of some kind, right? I live about 5 miles form Ohio, Hard to get more west than that an still be in PA.

We got 3 to 6 WVa folks coming - from 4 or 5 hours away. Depends some on the mining accident there since some of the are news photogs.

We got 1 coming form Bulter, and 2 or 3 from up north, Franklin or Oil City or some such.

2 of us from Beaver county, and one from the far south hills near Washington county. Last count was 16 or 17 coming, with possisbly 4 more than that! We even got a group rate - i'm still hoping for some special treatment or access or something.

At 11AM there is some musical group performing. They say the birds get off on that. See? Sex too. We got it all babay!

Yep, been in Butler for 23 years, will be leaving within the next few weeks. I graduated last month from PSU, so I'm not with the collegian any more, but yeah, it was a great job. I shot the Purdue game this past season and will try to make at least one game next season. Are you at university park? If so, you ought to consider trying out for the collegian - they have a great photo staff.

For those that missed, you missed a good time. Nine had breakfast, and 3 or 4 more went to the aviary.
I have to go watch the steeler game, but here is one i got today.

I'll post more later tonite. It was a great day for photography! We got to get a tour of Roy's studio - he's a pro since 79, advertising and architecture. Cool.

Yeah I am just a freshmen at PSU currently, and yes I am at university park...how does one go about 'trying out' for the collegian? I am pretty busy right now but maybe in a few weeks or so.

After 3 trips over as many years I am finally getting some nice shots from there. A 70-210 2.8 lens helps alot. A 300 sould have been good for some too. I did miss some cool shots - there was an employee feeding the birds in one of the tropical rooms where they fly free. He would toss some food in the air and they'd fly in and snatch it and some would hover in front of him. I did not have my flash handy, and 1/20 at 2.8 ISO 400 just wasn't gonna stop the action. Very neat to watch though.
