Okay, I have a roommate who is wanting to unload some of his old equipment. He is selling a Canon 70-200 F2.8L that is about 5-6 years old for like 450 US.

I have known the guy for more than a year and he's really conscientious and really well educated. He used to shoot weddings and assist pro's back in Vancouver and Australia.

He's also got a complete set of Bronica medium format kit that he's going to sell.

I trust the quality of the merchandise, but I'd love to know if anyone could think of any reason that buying this lens would be a bad idea.

I might add that I'm waiting until at least march until I bite the bullet and buy a DSLR. I will buy a Canon body (undecided which yet, and I imagine that around february there may be a new body from Canon as the 18 month cycle will hit, further opening options), and this lens IS on my short list of desired lenses.

I will be keeping the lens with a friend who actually has a canon body and knows how to use it.

Any comments?

I would like to do the purchase before the end of January as that is when he needs the money.

Considering the resale value of that lens, I can't really see a bad side to this idea.

Why so little for the lens? 450 is about 1/3 the going rate for new unless its IS then 1/4.

I can't see a down side anywhere. Even if for some strange reason you decided on a DSLR body other than Canon, you would have a profit if you resold that lens.
If you have the cash, jump!

We have been friends for a while. He is discouraged about the prices he has been hearing about in the Vancouver second hand district. He got a fairly good deal on it a few years back in Vancouver. He is very careful with his equipment.

I have helped him out with some technical assistance and he is just a nice guy. He wants to help me out as he knows how interested I am. I think he understands that my cash flow isn't as flush as his usually is either.

He's got 4 complete camera setups including the Canon 1N and the Bronica system. He feels it is time to get rid of some lenses.

He is also selling an 85mm f1.8 at a VERY tempting price, but I've already decided that I would prefer to go with the 50mm. I'll spend the other bunch of cash on a new Tamron 28-75 and pick up a lens reverser for macro stuff.

Like I said, I can't think of a downside to this one, except that I don't have a body yet :).

US$450 is a very good price for a 70-200mm f/2.8L, unless there are issues with it and it was not well taken care of....These L-lenses are fetching close to retail price on eBay...

the 85mm 1.8 would interest me quite abit...

If you don't want it I'll take it. That's a really good price if everything works well...

if it's in good condition, i'm more than interested. I'll sell my 80-200L...so hard to go through with though! How does a $150 commission sound LOL!

btw: what's the price on the 85?

Well, I haven't got a chance to look at the lenses yet, but I will say that the lenses are off the american market at this point. He is from vancouver but currently lives in Taiwan and will likely be moving to China in less than a year.

His cousin has already picked up the lenses and is bringing them to Taiwan. Due to his travel schedule, it is pretty much too late. Sorry if I got your hopes up.

Oh and the 70-200 is "spoken for". Even if I don't end up getting a DSLR body. I also feel pretty confident I could resell for a tidy profit even here in Taipei.

Strange boy that buys an L series Canon lens without a body for it.

Without a doubt you are getting a tremendous deal on this lens if it is in any kind of decent shape. I'd do exactly what you are doing. Way to think ahead!
