| I need some lighting advice. I dont have professional lights, bounce cards or any of that jazz. I try to get by with desk lamps and flishlights. I know its not the same, but i can't afford to get anything better at the moment. But so many times I end up with these awful hotspots or very harsh and or blochy lighting effects. So I try to use natural light whenever I can but there are sometimes its just not possible. I was just wondering what someother people do and if anyone has some good ideas to made do with what I have. |

i think heather has a tutorial on working cheap.
I find bouncing my worklamps off cardboard helps. Not much, but a bit ;)
I am afraid to try to diffuse them with paper or plastic less i set fire to the house! |

I serendipitously found cheap interesting lighting during the even challenge.
Cheap white plastic tablecloth as a backdrop. Behind the backdrop is a white (or insert color you want) posterboard angled (in my case about 15-20 degrees back). I shone a bright flashlight on the board, bounced it through the plasticpaperbackdrop and voila - not bad backlighting.

If I have to use the onboard flash I diffuse it. I actually built a small softbox to fit over my flash with 4x6 cards & white cloth.
I have heard breaking a plastic spoon off and rubberbanding it over the flash works well. |

Let me 'splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up:
1. TV
2. Posterboard
3. Object to light
4. TV Tray
5. Light
6. TV Tray Holder
7. Posterboard
8. Plastic stuff
9. $5 wal mart rolypoly clothes holder
10. black backdrop
11. Roll of plastic stuff
12. Mop
1 and 12 are not used for lighting; 10 was not used for the photo posted above.
Modify to your heart's content for various angles, etc. There should not be ambient light (unless you want it). I wait until dark and turn out all other light sources. I could go in the basement where it's dark dark dark; it is, however, cold down there.
Yes ... I own, and have used, a mop.
Edit to be somewhat coherent.
