I am in the process of adding another feature to DPCstats. I will named ‘Best in Show’ and will allow users to nominate the photographs, photographers, users, and site council members that they think should be nominated for there contributions to DPChallenge. Do you think this would be a good addition to DPCstats?

So far here are the categories I have. Please help me in creating more categories or renaming some. Any assistance would be appreciative.

Categories so far:
Photograph: Best Challenge Entry
Photograph: Best Profile Photograph
Photograph: Best in show

Photographer: Most Inspirational
Photographer: Most Creative
Photographer: Best in show

User: Best in sharing useful information
User: Best in commenting and critiquing
User: Best in show

Site Council: Most informative
Site Council: Most active
Site Council: Best in show

Any suggestions, addition, and alterations along with debate would be helpful. I hope to have this feature up and running by Jan 1, 2006. Allowing users to nominate from Jan 1 – Jan 15, 2006. Results will be posted by Jan. 20, 2006

Would this be a one time thing, or something that changes periodically (weekly, montly, quarterly?)

I only ask because our "population" changes frequently, and pictures/photographs change more than that. . .

Another category in "photograph" could be best portfolio piece (or just best portfolio) that is NOT a challenge pic.

It would be once a year (2005, 2006, etc) and I like your suggestion of best portfolio.
The main reason I would like to do this project is because there are a lot of users that get lost in th 47,000 + community and this would be a chance for others to nominate them. Not just ribbon winners here. Users that contribute day-by-day.

sounds like it has potential for a popularity contest...leaving out the kids who were always picked last in gym class.

Also add a "don't want to see stuff like this"-button in the preferences page please. Not interested at all.

Sorry you feel that way but its your right. All you would have to do is not click on the link. As it stands now you are in the ribbon list if you feel strongly that you are not interested I can do a quick update and remove you from that as well if you wish.

No, thank you, that won't be necessary. I am in a rather grumpy mood. I might also be missing something here, is this a project on the DPC site or do you run it on your own pages?

Edit: OK, found the pages. Don't mind me, I thought this was another addition to DPC itself. Sorry.

No problem. I understand and respect everyones opinion and I thank highly for your honest reply.

This is a small site I run myself (manually entries) just for fun for the people here at dpc. Again remember your input is important and will gratefully accept it.
Thanks,
-SDW

Thanks for the ones that took time to give some input.

Looks like at this time users are not ready or wanting a feature like this so I will hold off. Maybe 2006, It's to much work and the overall honored people would be skewed with little input from users.

Thanks again,
-SDW

EDIT: If you think of anything that you would like to see on DPCstats you are input is welcome.

I'd like to see fourth and fifth places taken into account somehow in your stats thing. But then I would, wouldn't I?

I say go for it. Pre-announcing anything on DPC either invites trouble or people ignore it but would still be interested once it takes place.

What Ken said. Seem slike a nice idea. Just do it, man. ANYTHING that gets pre-announced gets shot down, but the people that LIKE it rarely have much to say.

You should make a category for the younger members...like: 21 and Under; Best in Show, etc...

I think is a greatidea. Maybe you can add a category in photographer like Best new photographer and Best progression. Don't know if they are good ideas.

I don't think we need a vote for that one. Just stick Ken's name in immediately. ;)

I find the opposite -- implementing something and then announcing it has not gone over well here in my experience.

I'd like to see more lists than individual "winners"

There are so many good challenge entries, and so many good photos, that it's really not meaningful to pick one.

Also, anything that acknowledges "other" photos is good. The challenge winners already have their kudos and many views and favs. Other photos tend to get too little attention site-wide.

Ideas:

100 best of nonchallenge photos on the site
100 Most underrated challenge photos
100 Funniest photos (challenge or otherwise)
100 Best critiques (challenge or otherwise)

etc. You just gather the list, and take the top 100 in each category. Trick would be simply "how" to collect votes in a manner that's easy to deal with.

It just seems like the people that are already recognized for their exceptional work will get even more recognition.... dont really see the point in that.... they already know they are good by winning, etc....

How about recognizing continually under-rated photos and photographers...
