Ya, I may have just given the excuse to lock this thread. Oh well, it's outlived its uselessness and made its point. :-) |

Yeah, the "freeloaders" do their work to contribute to the community too, you can't poo on them all the time. We all used to be them at one point remember? |

I'm convinced this site exists not primarily for photography, not for revenue generation, but rather for the explicit amusement of its founders. Can you imagine how much Drew and Langdon must chuckle at threads like this? They probably call each othere and ask "Did you check out thread 318311 today? Should we throw 'em a bone?" "Nah, let 'em stew and lets see what happens!"
Everybody is so SERIOUS *spoken in a low voice* about life and photography and speculation runs rampant. At least I find it amusing.
And for the record on the original dicussion, I'd pay $100/year for membership. It's worth it. |

Well at least you'd increase your odds for winning alot more challenges. I don't think there'd be as many others around to challenge you at $100/year.

I made, or intended, no such point. My point is the other way round; that in most cases what's good for the community is also good for the business. I find if we focus on the community, the business side tends to take care of itself.

I agree registered only users (no blue shirt right now:) are a drag on the bandwidth e.t.c. The question is what is the added value of the conversations, photos e.t.c. compared to if they were no here. Some will convert to members but some are just driving volume which in turn helps the paying members. As somebody said (in different words), a loss leader is sometimes a useful business tatic. |
When DPC first started offering paid membership, Drew and Langdon committed to the fact that all features that were free at that time would remain free. Since that time, Drew and Langdon have not only kept that promise but have added significant new functionality, not only for paid Members but for free Registered Users as well.
As a Registered User, you are welcome to use the free portions of our service for as long as you like. There is no requirement that you ever purchase a membership. Of course, we hope you will, but we want you to do so because you want access to the added challenges, features, etc, rather than because we in some way forced your hand.
I believe that DPC is its own best form of advertising. The features do pretty much sell themselves.

I think to increase membership D&L should start adding something to the members area that would increase "sales" if you will.

Well with us being locked out of submitting photos, maybe DPC doesn't make as much as everyone thought in this thread.... =)

At the $2.08 per month that my membership costs me, I would have a hard time believing D&L make much off this hobby site. They would be doing well to break even. $65K or so yearly is not a lot for running an operation like this. |
