There are a few good pencil shots in this weeks Something New challenge aswell. I wonder of those artists will submit one of their un-used shots or take some fresh ones. |

We have 3 pencil shot in the "something new" and 2 og Crayola wich I think is simular to the pencil thing. I do not like this challenge and think it will be a lot of pictures who looks the same. Thou I´ll try to get something I think i will never get a good picture because the winning picture is gonna be something extremle closeup and I can´t do that on my Ixus. It had be better with pencil/pen challenge.

You don't HAVE to have the pencil close up. Anything that is creative and original, and is taken well will win this one I think. |

does it have to be a pencil like a writing pencil or can it be a colored pencil? |

I swear it used to say #2 pencil, but now it only says pencil. I think that means colored pencil, regular pencil, mechanical pencil (although it will probably be mistaken as a pen), There are lots of different kinds of pencils. Don't know about everyone else, but as long as it's a pencil of some sort, it meets the challenge in my eyes. ~Heather~ |

It did say #2, I think they changed it to be more politically (or globally) correct = P

being a spectator of this site for a while now, i am glad to have finally join the ranks.
i took a picture yesterday of a "pencil" and it cracked me up to just have it. Now i cant believe i can actually use it for this purpose. It's going to be great!
I can't wait to see what other people come up with...

I would hope - that is now it just says PENCIL - that it means - as long as it's a pencil....But we all better make sure that it LOOKS like a pencil..lol There really shouldn't be any..'doesn't meet the challenge'...
Always up to the voter! Isn't that what we all love about it? If not, then we wouldn't be having these wonderfully challenging threads - right?
I'm looking forward to this - I think it'll be fun.

Careful!! If you took the picture yesterday, it will probably be disqualified. All you have to do is take your picture again today (or sometime this week) and THEN submit it. I had taken some pencil pictures (like many other people) for the something new challenge (NO, I'm not one of the pencil submissions), and I think I'm going to have to re take a few of those cause I like the whole pencil idea. (and they are cheap right now cause of all the back to school sales!) ~Heather~ |

Curious - How do think funky and different pencils will fare? that is, not the traditional pencils??
Or is that the point of the challenge...the traditional pencil??

Personally, If it physically has a pencil in it of any sort, as long as it's good (and not JUST a picture of a pencil) it's got my vote. Maybe hard to judge though cause of the similarities of the photos, so I would actually suggest something a little different. Someone said that there shouldn't be any "does not meet challenge" photos this week. I can tell you, if I see a picture of a tree with a title "future pencil", I'm going to scream. lol. Also, word of advice, don't try to copy the pencil pics that are in the "something new" challenge, people may not like that very much and rate very low. I personally think it would be tasteless and have a huge "lack of originality". Maybe it's just me. ~Heather~ |

...too funny...too true!!!
I definately would not copy another's photo - only for learning, that is trying to repeat the technique, but not for a photo submit or anything. I may use it to get my own ideas though.
Heather, you're funny...future pencil...LOL :-)

I LOVE THIS CHALLENGE!!! What a great idea to make us all use the same subject (well, with few variations)! This is a TRUE challenge cause we're all starting with the same thing and have to come up with something we think will look unique. Now it's all about technique and originality. Awesome! |

I actually wish we could make this one a lot more specific than it has become. OK, I understand there aren't #2 pencils worldwide. Fair enough. But I wish we were all going to be limited to a basic yellow writing pencil -- I can't believe those aren't a world-wide occurrence.
I think a lot of people may end up relying on finding an interesting pencil (I have one here at work with a koosh ball on top of it) for their shot instead of stretching themselves to make the shot of the pencil itself BE interesting.
Maybe the next challenge could be to shoot with a chicken egg. White or brown is acceptable. No ostrich eggs, no robin eggs, JUST chicken eggs. I'd even take it a step further and say it can't be a broken egg to avoid the whole egg yolk, egg white, cooked eggs thing from happening.... (Or if you don't want to shoot eggs, then name your own average everyday same the world over object.)

Patella...so I should stick with the 'traditional pencil' huh? You're right, taking a photo of an 'interesting' pencil instead of making an 'ordinary' pencil look more interesting, really wouldn't be quite as challenging. So I'll stick with the basic traditional yellow writing pencils.
...I just bought some new macro lenses...can't wait, I'll be doing this all week!!! Especially since I didn't submit for the 'Something New'.

I should be sleeping right now but....
Actually, our basic pencils are not only HB here, they're generally red rather than yellow. |

We chose pens instead of pencils, hoping there would be less variation in the subject. Requiring anything further than 'pencil' will stir the ranks of some activist group or third world country, so we'll just leave it at that. Me, personally... yellow #2 pencil all the way.

"Apparently it's the same in the UK"
Yup - HB = Neutral. #B = soft, bigger the #, softer the pencil. H = Hard, bigger the #, harder the pencil.
Generally red - Hmmmmm, guess so. |
