i've heard of owners of both the 300L/4 IS and the 100-400L say that the prime with 1.4x is sharper than the zoom. I'd say there's no issue with the sharpness of the lens, infact i think it's one of canons very nice primes and i've only heard good things. |

please be reminded while it's probably true, canon's MTF charts are not real tests, they're scientific predictions. |

There are NO issues with that lens...None whatsoever in everyday use...and it works great as a 420mm f/5.6 IS when used with a 1.4x TC. |

Now who's pixel peeping. |
You are...you have to shoot at f/8 I can shoot at f/4, 2 stops of light....makes the difference between getting the shot and not getting it...

Come on lets face it neither f4 nor f8 is a fast lens for low light work. If you want a fast lens at 300 then you should be looking at the 300mm f2.8L IS ot the Sigma 120-300 EX f2.8.
Remember the 70-300 IS's widest aperature is 5.6. One stop, if you're gonna pixel peep, let's pixel peep, if you say that MTF doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter.
