I know they're not the greatest macros, but they're far better than I've yet been able to achieve. I don't think they're that bad considering they were taken from a 70-200mm telephoto. Plus a 2x extender and a 500D filter. (100% crops)

: )

I like the penny one. How wide is the full image?

The penny basically fills the whole scene...

I'm wondering if more flash would improve it. I think tonight I'll try a dollar bill. That way there is more comparison.

Though I was really surprised to get the detail of "2005" from a non-macro telephoto.

I am curious, anyone have a top of the line "macro" shot of the date on a penny so I can compare it to?

I'll take one if you want?

I'd appreciate that...

(I mean, these are the highest macros I've been able to achieve. And since I am not using a macro lense I am very curious to see how they compare.)

I'll throw in my $.02 ;-)

Lighting something as reflective as a penny can be trouble as you can see, but since the subject is so small you can really use alot of diffusion.

First image used diffusion. Second direct flash.

Not great photos I know, but I was just doing some testing.

Both images Nikon Nikkor EL 75mm f2.8 enlarging lens on an Olympus E-500.

Okay, here's a penny under a kitchen spotlight. 60mm Canon Macro lens set to 1:1, point of focus on the date, f/11 aperture. There's a slight falloff in sharpness to the top 'cuz this was shot at a slight angle; I didn't take the time to set my 'pod with the howizontal-column option so I could shoot this exactly flat.

Does that help?

Here's what a macro ringflash gets you. Didn't have a shiny, new penny.

Note the unususal shadows around the date numerals.

Can you guys post 100% crops of just the date?

Wow you can see the grit in the metal with that... and that was the 60mm macro?
12/15/2005 11:53:17 PM · #14
do you have any extension tubes, are they used in these shots?
12/15/2005 11:54:33 PM · #15
Yup. Canon EF-S 60mm macro, focused 1:1, lit by a single overhead tungsten downlight a little off true vertical from the penny. Looking at it at 100%, I'm not even sure I nailed the focus right; I think it could be sharper yet. This was manually focused. I added mid-high sharpening to it in the RAW processor. I wonder what it looks like blown up like that with less sharpening? I never blew one up this far before :-)

Me? No extension tubes. This is a 640-pixel-wide crop out of a 3500-pixel, 1:1 image.

I just took a few more...all off a $20 bill. So if you've got a $20 you can compare it.

Here is a 100% crop, no USM (though USM improved it quite a bit when using the suggest 300%/0.3/0 formula)

Here is a view of the total capture reduced to 640x plus USM

Here is the flag

Here's the same image run from RAW with NO sharpening dialled in at all:

as compared to the previous one, which had been sharpened for full-frame viewing:

I got no 20's in the house :-( I got some used 1's, that's it.

Hmm...when you get a $20, can you post the same shots?

If you're still interested in January, sure :-)

Illuminated by macro ringflash. This gives a very flat illumination. Image--though way oversharpened--barely gives a sense of structure in the background...compare with Bear's images.

The light halos around the numerals are a result of the illumination and are not sharpening artifacts.
