I picked up an autofocuds flash today from Jessops because it was in the clearance, but it won't fit on my S7000. Judging by the picture on the box and that in the s7000 manual it is missing a locking ring on the flash... am I supposed to have this already/ it's present on the front of the box but not attached to the flash.

*sheesh*

I'm lame, I came into this thread thinking it was a question about Macromedia's Flash... *lol*

Could you post some pics so that we can see what you mean?

Need more info - the S7000 takes a hot shoe flash, the standard kind. there is a locking ring of storts on the flash at the hotshoe that you tighten to keep the flash from falling off the camera.

What do you mean by 'autofocus flash'? I am not famiiar with that term.

Here is an image of it. The auction that's off says it is dedicated to Nikon SLR's but it mentions nothing of this on the box...

Anyway, the locking ring and the piece below it with the circular metal disc in the centre (which would fit onto my camera) are missing, not in a snapped off sense they just don't seem to have been clipped on. Instead I'm left witha fixture which won't fit my camera.

perhaps it would help if you showed us what the flash you have looks like so we can compare to the stock photo?

Okay...the knurled thumbwheel has to be there or else it won't stay on the hotshoe. it secures it there as well as makes sure the electrical parts make contact.

TTL - Through The Lens metering - regardless, the Fuji S7000 does not do this with any flash. IF the flash has manual or Auto modes then you cna use it with the fuji no problem.

Wait, brain engaging...you are saying the WHOLE FOOT is missing? Okay then - you need to talk to jessops about this as their name (in this pic) is on the flash...Metz flashes work this way - the 'foot' as they call it contains the brains or interfce between the flash unit and the camera brand (one shoe/foot for nikon, another for canon, etc). The flash itself is the same unit. So for Metz you can get shoes like
this or they make a generic one that is cheap (US$30).

You may have a metz flash that has a jessops name on it...i don't know but they should.

OK, I may be completely wrong about this but auto focus flashes need to be on the camera that they are dedicated to to work properly as the distance information comes from the camera.

The best advice I can offer about a flash for the S7000 (which doesn't do dedication things) is to go on ebay and grab a cheap cobra Auto210 or Auto250, neither of which is auto focus, but either of which can usually be picked up for less than £5 (including postage) if your willing to wait a few days. If you have slightly more cash to throw at the problem maybe a Vivitar283 or 285 (not 100% sure of those numbers) would be better for you but ususally go for closer to £20.

This I know nothing about, hope I haven't just complicated the issue :)

285 is where its at. 35 bucks for something so powerful.

Autofocus - you might mean autozoom?
Yeah, they get the focal length of the lens form the camera, and the fuji won't do that. But all such flashed can be zoomed manually, and if you bounce the flash the zoom is unimportant.

Thanks guys, best I can do right now for info on it is what prof_fate said, the foot itself is missing, there are connections on the part that's left but part which would fit on the camera is missing. Apparently the flash has manual modes etc so it should work ok with it... i'll check out your suggestions too. Cheers!

Yeah it's a Jessops flash btw, so i'll see them today.

I'm willing to bet the reason the flash was ON clearance is that they pirated the part for another customer who needed it...

Lollylops, seems the reason it didn't have that bit (despite the front picture having it) is that there was a little transparent sticker on saying JESSOPS FLASH then 'for minolta dynax' in teeny letters. My own fault I guess, I'll check out the ones mentioned as non eedicated.
