Does anyone know where the somewhat-magical red autofocus dots come from? Or for that matter, anything that illuminates on the screen to let you know where the focus is. I've seen this on my Rebel XT and a D70s, and was wondering if it is some type of light that illuminates from the focus screen itself. Such that the focus screen is somehow electronically connected to the camera. Or is it a beam of light that comes from somewhere else inside the camera? I read that if you install an aftermarket split focusing screen or any other type of aftermarket screen, that the red dots will no longer appear. This leads me to believe it doesn't come from a beam of light, or it seems like it would still shine on an aftermarket screen if nothing else was changed.

i'm interested as well... on the 1D series almost the whole screen is covered by the 45 rectangles that glow red. No idea here where they go or where they come from! |

The rectangles themselves are printed on the screen, I believe. The red part is projected. I could be wrong :-)

I'm 100% sure the rectangles are printed on the screen, as I've seen them. I can't figure out how the red lights are projected onto the screen though. And why would replacing the printed focus screen with a focus screen with no print on it cause the red lights to disappear?

aren't they just red LED's of some sort, placed on a clear substrate? when a current is applied they light up, right?

To look for the rectangles, take the lens off your camera, and look up into the camera toward the viewfinder. It should be printed on there. Side note: I bought my camera used a couple months ago and I just realized today that my focusing screen is missing. The autofocus still works fine, and I've taken plenty of pics with it that were in good focus. There's just no focusing screen, clip, or metal shim that normally holds it in place. Interesting.
