I think a 800x600 @ 200k would be enough. And again, It sounds like all the excuses to this argument are based on the minority of users. |

I vote on other sites that have larger size limits. The photos that exceed my screen and make me scroll get skipped. Simply can't see all the photo. By the way I do use dial up and I have no problem loading 800x600 photos. |

That's no laughing matter. :(
My monitor runs at 1600x1200, which is it's native resolution and where it is most clear, crisp and sharp. Move away from this resolution is not nice to the images, makes them soft and less well defined.
A larger resolution is just far more efficient for nearly everything I do. However, the tiny 640x640 images are just slightly more than 1/5th of the screen.

We moved to the sticks in May and we are fortunate to have DSL but so many in our area can't get it. My dad had dialup when he lived here and it was the slowest of slows. My husband was also fortunate to find a job here with a new company that is offering wireless broadband to rural areas. They basically put an antenna on a water tower or radio tower and then a dish type antenna is installed on the house. It's speeds are even faster than DSL. People around here are jumping on it like crazy. I think it's about $125. to set up and then $45 a month.
Moving here made me realize just how many can't get Broadband. Why make things harder for them?

A majority of users are running 1024x768.

Maybe quite the opposite if only 10 people have started a thread on the subject over a period of 3 years. ;^)

How many have started a thread saying they like 640 pixels? I doubt that is a good way to check the pulse of DPC. I do think issues like this is why the better photographers fade away from this site... |

Well...within the 10 threads started the debate has been healthy, but without a true consensus either way, if anything it appears most are happy with the status quo.
If people are happy with something it's rare that a thread is going to be started saying "Hey, I really like the 640 pixel image layout of DPChallenge submissions!". Get real!
As for photographers leaving the site because of THIS issue is a REAL stretch. But thanks for the chuckle. ;^)

Why are you still here?
I'm curious. Did Laurie mentor MeThOs in math?

I wonder why you'd say this? I'm not at all try to be sarcastic, rather wondering if you know if anyone has left for this reason? |

I was talking more about the mind set of the site, not this specific issue.

Hey! I'm on dial-up, don't I matter? I don't particularly like the bullying tone of this poster. It is a challenge site, we are all equalled by the 640 pixel / 150kb restrictions. Nobody is disadvantaged by these restrictions so what's the beef?
This is not a professional portfolio site. It's not a site for print viewing. This is not a site from which we are trying to sell our work. There are hundreds of other sites for these things - this is not one of them. Who likes what the rduction to 640 does to their image - not me. But it's appropriate to this site and for this purpose.
Dial-up is not the only issue either.
- Think of the storage costs! 800x600 is an exponential increase in storage requirements. Somebody has to pay for that.
- Think of the traffic costs for every DSL user during voting! Viewing and voting on hundreds of images is going to kill those people who are trying to run on economy traffic plans. If you're paying by the GB, this is going to kill you.

I'm sure the site maintainers check the logs quite often to get a pulse of who is using the site and how they are connecting and viewing.
Screen resoltuion and connection type are both very common elements in access logs. I'm sure the maintainers take a fairly close look at these numbers when implementing new features, as do all competent web developers.
Seeing the DPC is a fairly complex piece of PHP programming, I have no questions about thier competence. So, I'm pretty sure thier call on the 600xD (150kb) limit is a well informed decision.

I think we should vote on thumbnails only. This will save all kinds of money.

You have failed to state any major advantages to using a 800xD size ...
By the way, to get the most out of 600xD try NOT putting a 10 pixel wide border around your challenge entries.

The originator and antagonist in this thread has been a member since july 2003 and has entered just ONE challenge.
This is a joke, I have better things to do with my time.
