| I saw an artcile in which a filter was used to the same effect as a polarizer, but on a really overcast day. I think it said it was an ND grad filter or something, could someone clarify for me as I'm quite new to filters, and living in England would appreciate a filter to emphasise the sky. |

Almost certainly a graduated ND filter, yes.

| For grads though I'd recommend a Cokin or Cokin like system since you have control where the grad line ends up. |

I have both a B&W screw in Grad ND and a Cokin Grad ND. Definitely go with the Cokin if you are going to get one. It's a lot easier to use.

I'll probably go with the Hoya as the less equipment to carry the better at the mo.
So I want a Hoya Neutral density filter right? Where does the graduate come into it as all the ones I've found are either ND or Grad, not both. |

Usually Grad means Grad ND. Just check the description of the item before you buy.

| ND would darken the sky. You may want to add color to the sky by using a blue graduated filter. |

I believe that the S7000 can shoot RAW, if not, then please ignore me. I once tried out RAWShooter Essentials and the highlight contrast and shadow contrast tools can really bring a sky out. You're just left with a bit of blending then. You're not limited by the amount of gradient in the filter that way.
