any way you could maybe put a small cable or rope on the back of it and tie it to the wall to keep it from moving...this could work for the tree too ;)

i have read that cats do not like citrus, so can you find a citrus spray for the tree to keep them away from it?

buy a dog.

of course then you need to keep the dog under control and buy a gorilla. The gorilla might try and eat the tree so then you need to buy a tiger to keep the gorilla under control.. but then the tiger might want to sleep in the tree or eat your kids... hmmm... that is a tough one...

Spray the tree with lemon pledge. They won't touch it.

How big is the tree and where (on what) is it standing?

Edit: Also, how many cats and how big are the cats?

I've never had a cat that kept trying to climb the tree but have had them eat the tinsel. Not good for them so we always put tinsel only on the top half of the tree.

If you have dangly ornaments near the bottom of the tree, move them out of reach.

I've seen someone put a cardboard 'disc' around the tree so the cats can't go up. Not sure if it really works or not.

We have a Blue Spruce this year. They have very pokey needles. Ouch! It was even painful to hang the lights and ornaments!

Anchor the tree with wire/twine to the wall...? Kind of drastic, but...

Good luck!

We used to run a wire from the tree to a hook in the ceiling (make sure said hook is in a beam and not just drywall). Attach the wire low enough on the tree for good support on the trunk tho'. 'Bout 2 feet from the top. for big trees we used three wires and "three pointed" them out from the tree. They didn't show up too much but our ceiling was not white.

I used to use guy wires of monofliament fishing line tied off to coffee cup hooks in the molding around the ceiling.
Either that or strip off the insulation on your tree lights :)

the new trend over here in Holland is to attach your christmas tree to the ceiling.

is that a good idea?
