Damn Mike, from the title I thought YOU were selling one. I don't think I really want one of those. I have the 600 and that is about as heavy a lens as I need to tote around.

First time I have ever seen one for sale. I would spring for it if it came in black but I don't want the attention of one in white :-) |

What's "need" got to do with it? Sheesh, man, go to the GYM. And if I ask you nicely, can I borrow this one after you buy it?

I remember seeing one on ebay for $35,000.
Didn't know how rare it was...now I wonder if I should have maxed my card and turned around and asked $55,000 for it.
Then I could buy a 1Ds MK II, +600mm, +200mm f/1.8 IS, and well all the other lenses I want. |

Check it out in this story here. Note that the camera mounts to the lens looking down (it's a telescope). Note that it comes with its own tripod. Bear in mind that if you mount this on a 20D you get a 1920mm effective focal length. Apparently you can read the lower line on an optometrist's wall chart from 20 blocks away when you use the xl-1 EOS adaptor, or whatever :-)

That is just the way the XL1 bends. When attached to an SLR it mounts the same as any other lens.

Now I get it: the "down-mount" is the xl-1 EOS adaptor, you also can straight-mount the cam for "normal" use...

Actually, using a 20D, plus the XL1 EOS mount, plus the 2x extender on a Canon 20D would in fact result in a 27,648mm lens er telescope...er Cannon!!! |

Wasn't aware that you could use the Xl-1 mount on a still camrea body.

The mount is merely an adapter to mount Conon EOS EF lenses to the XL 1 and the XL 2. It does nothing more then that and posseses no magnification or magical powers.

You could get the same thing by using a 1Ds Mk II and cropping. The XL 2 has a 680,000 pixel CCD chip and the 1Ds Mk II has a 16,600,000 CMOS chip. Do the math.

Well then it's off the list since it's not able to do macro :-) |

Hey that's not necessarily true. My 70-200mm with 2x extender does some pretty profound enlargement. Probably would do even more with an extension tube.
The issue is not whether you can do macro shots....but the fact that you have to do them from approx. 50ft away.
But think of the awesome butterfly shots you can get of Monarchs resting during migration 30 ft up in a tree.

Actually the lens is quite capable of macro. I do macro using my 600/4 and an extention tube quite often. The advantage is the increased distance from the subject the combination affords you. Quite handy when working with flying insects.
