I hope we're not taking for granted the huge fun and enhancement that the second Open Challenge has bought to DPC. My personal thanks to all involved in making that happen - is it working from SC's point of view?

If it is working, is likeley to become a regular feature and it doesn't involve SC members or Administrators in giving more of their valuable time I have a suggestion.

If the second challenge is a permanent fixture, how about changing the period for it to Friday-Thursday. Doing that, we can spread the three challenges across the week. I find myself desperately trying to get all the voting done (commeting on each one)before the Tue closing in particular.

Just a thought .. good? ... bad? ... or just palin ugly?

I am for making it permanent, but changing the dates might get confusing, but it would be nice to spread them out a little.

Definately make it permanent. I think spreading it out would be a good idea too!

Ok, I've just though of how to kill my own idea. The original reason for the two open challenges was to split the number of entries into manageable numbers.

Splitting the submission days would have to maintain the restriction that you cannot enter both, only one of them in the same week.

If that involves more coding work for Langdon, I can't back it. Those guys do too much for us as it is :)

Now that I think about it, I have to agree!

Good idea, but it could also pose other logistics challenges other than coding. Such as more site outages for calculation.

I hadn't thought of the rcalculation outages. Normally we hardly notice them but when Free Study was recalculating the site was down for several hours. Was that something to do with all of our email addresses being hacked?

Running exclusive challenges not concurrently would be a big headache I think, as it would make it hard for users to choose one challenge or the other.

Say the A cycles is Wed-Tue as usual and the B cycle is Fri-Thu. User X enters an A cycle challenge that starts on say (for simplicity's sake) the 1st of the month. When the new cycle B challenge is announced, they like this topic and want to enter. Are they allowed to? If not they wind up stuck in a rut of A cycle challenges unless they skip one. If they are allowed to enter it, do they have to wait until the A challenge ends and enter the B challenge in the last two days? Is that fair? Even if they enter at the end, it still overlaped with the other they were entered in...etc. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth to me.

There should be the same number of entries per week regardless of when individual challenges start, so if you find yourself rushing to vote on tuesday, start voting earlier!!!

Clever viewpoint - and a valid one.

Yep the idea started to fall apart when we realised that it's not threee challenges in the week, it's only two. You just get to choose between the two Open Challenges. As you quite rightly point out, you'd have to wait for the B challenge to be announced before deciding. Bad idea.

That Kiwipix dude has crap ideas, don't take any notice of him.
