Hi guys,
I want to buy this lens, but is there is a fundemental difference between the normal Canon 50mm f/1.8 and the "II" model, apart from that it's newer?

| Not for me. it's the same glass I believe :) Plus it's only a measely $70 :D Good price point for me :D |

the II has a plastic mounting plate, whereas the I has a metal plate. Not a problem unless you are really going to be changing the lens a lot (and I mean a lot).
I've had my II for almost 3 years now and no sign of any problems.

I have the 50mm and its a very nice, small, compact and most importantly sharp lens. I have the tamron 28-75mm as well and since the tamron is just as good as the 50 @ 50mm i havent used my 50mm ever since getting the tamron.

Either one is highly rated, especially for the price. The major difference on the Mark I is the metal mount, although some people insist it's marginally better optically.
If they were the same price I'd go for the Mark I but they tend to go for $100 or so on ebay and you can have a new Mark II for less.
It's on my shopping list :)

Very happy - if I was buying again I would maybe look at the 1.4, but thats a different price range.

I believe, that the I and II editions have the same optics but the I version has a metal mount, a proper focus ring, and a window scale.
I find it good for close up portraits of kids in the living room.
Good lens for the money, but I don't use it a lot. I tend to use the Tamron 17-35 with a 1.3 crop on the 1D Mark II N or the Tokina 12-24 on the XT.

| i think the main difference is, if you drop the 50mm II, you're out of a lens. If you drop the 50mm I, you're only maybe out of a lens. |
