Thinking about the Road Signs Challenge, and with the fact that I just bought some new lighting gear, my first idea was to go buy a road sign from one of those hobby shops, like for a train set or something, and do a cool photo with that. But it wouldn't be a "Road Sign" in the blatant sense. Then I remembered a comment, someone said something about making a landscape in his house with Grape Nuts (haha!).

So my point is, there are risks in thinking outside the box. I want to have that picture with that Wow factor, and almost always it'll the only one like it.

So how much risk are you willing to take to win a challenge? So much that your record number of 10's will be outweighed by your record number of 1's? And get that dreaded inverted graph?

Not sure about myself yet. I'd rather do the best that I can do, regardless if it requires a little wiggle room to meet the challenge. I'm still waiting for the day to take that photo worthy of putting on my own wall.

Tony, one of the big issues I see here is that people are forgetting that this is about expression. It should be about pleasing yourself and not others. Sorry to say that most here seem to think of the target audience instead of what they like and want to say. The ad-nauseum commentary about putting structures or people in the landscape contest is proof positive of my point.

I applaud the people that entered the landscape challenge with their vision knowing full well that some would vote it down. I have put in images that are purely my vision in mind. They are all images I like looking at. My favorite is my Four submission. Cooincidentally it is my lowest scoring image. I dont care. I like it.

Isn't that what it is all about? I say shoot what you want to and stop being hung up on general acceptance or what someone elses idea of the "breadth" of the comp is. There is no real risk. So you get voted low and don't win. Who cares? Your share of the prize money is the same as the person in first place. Zero sum gain. Since there is nothing to win except a boost to the ego, you might as well just strive to get a photo that YOU love....

Just my thoughts.

Personally I think this would be definitely on-topic for the challenge. A miniature road-sign would be more on topic that a shop-sign, for example. I saw go for it and add some creativity to the challenge. It will be interesting to see how many people are inventive as opposed to how many take a shot of a sign with a nice sunset behind it.
