My camera is about 3 years old, an HP 850, and im noticing now that it is no longer focusing as sharply as it once did, and is almost impossible for me to focus without the flash on. I actually sell digital cameras and i have not heard of this problem before. Is this just something that happens when cameras get old or is something just wrong with mine?

Sounds like the AF system has degraded. If focus is better with the flash on, then it may be that the cam emits a focus assist beam when flash is enabled, and this is helping focus.
I have not heard of or seen this type of behavior, but it's certainly possible. Whether it's economical to have the camera serviced to find/repair the issue is another matter...
