OK, I've never started a thread like this before but ...101st, 4th last? c'mon it wasn't that bad was it?
The idea behind the shot was that only when you are older do things like greenhouses, allotments and gardens etc. matter to you
The sense of peering over the garden wall/hedge/fence
The etherial light of the object of your desires (your neighbour's greenhouse)
Did I not manage to convey that at all?
I think I'm just getting too good for this site and my work is misunderstood!
bah humbug

One of the hardest things about a non-juried, public voting site where the competitors vote for or against their competition is that that it is a lot like those "Am I Hot or Am I Not" sites. People have a hard time taking criticism on their creations which is a lot like criticism on themselves.
It's not good or bad, just the way it is. If you do well here it says that, well, ...ummm...you do well here :-D
If you don't do well here...it means (you guessed it!) you don't do well..HERE :-)
Your photo was not my cup of tea. I vote it a 4. BUT!!!! 42 people did like it well enough to score it higher than a 5 so there was something that struck them.
You know.....Desperate Housewives has a lot of people watch it..I don't. C-Span does not have nearly as many watching but I watch C-Span a lot more than Desperate Housewives. Ain't America Great!!! :-D

I didn't get that the viewpoint was looking over a neighbor's fence. In this case the foreground is so out of focus that I couldn't tell what it was.
Blown out images, while usually intentional and IMO an excellent tool, tend to get voted lower here almost on principal. Kind of an inexplicable knee-jerk reaction on the part of voters.
It's possible a different title might have done a better job of conveying your intent... |

Kind of harsh telling us we are all wrong...when I was a kid my mom told me that if you ever think everyone else is wrong and you are right, you're not. 40 some odd years later it is still true.
Left comment...
your = ownership - your dinner is served
you're = you are - you're all wrong

Personally, I kind of like the photo. Kind of a whimsical photo. So I think the foreground is supposed to be out of focus. Isn't that what you call bokeh? I have the same problem of getting some of my photos across to people on here.
Take care...

Steve,
Before I comment further I have to say I gave it a 5, simply because there is nothing startling which makes me really want to take a second look.
I guess the thing you saw before you took the image remains inside your head and when you see the image it re-activates that memory. I have several thousand shots which fall into the same category. I know that were I to show them out of context they would get the same treatment as this image.
In fact my Knife/Fork/Spoon entry is looking like its going to be one. I thought it was really neat, but obviously the voters don't have the context so its a bummer. Currently sat at 4.5 ish.
Just move on, learn from it and start to think about the candles challenge ! |

DPC is a fun site with virtual ribbons as a prize but its just fun and opinionated thats all.. I been here over 1 year, entered 70 odd challenges and never been near a ribbon yet but I think as long as you can enjoy your picture that is important, try to improve by studying the work of others and if you want to win a ribbon here then study WHAT TYPE of picture gets a ribbon.. I personally like ALL my shots and I care very little about people who vote my work a 1-2-3 because I LIKE IT and even if 1 other likes it enough to say "this is nice" then its a good days work..
I like your pic.

I have had a few photos that people thought were ok and I have had a few that people thought sucked. I felt equally charged up about both experiences :-D
A lot of people are here mainly for them. To get feedback, to get verification of their existence or relevance in their hobby, just to be acknowledged that hey..they too like to take photos..ain't it cool.
So if you can get satisfaction from the whole community effect, mainly the interaction and discussion here, I found it's easier to take all of the judging stuff so much better and light hearted which means you won't mind posting a less than perfect photo or taking a tangent maybe only you can understand.

Thank you!!! I wish this little blurb would appear at the top of every form that allows people to post comments to the web.

The way I look at my scores is basically this way.
If I get a 5.0 or above, I am doing good. I have a pix that I can work with that the general public may like, and may purchase. A litmus test of sorts.
If I get a ribbon, all the better, but I am not submitting pix just for a ribbon. I also submit pix, such as my freestudy submission, to see if anyone is paying attention. Like doctors and their tests, a placibo is needed sometimes to see if there are any viewers that can detect crap, or not.
My advice, shoot for what you know you can receive, in your case a 6.0 or better. Take the pix that you like, have a jury judge your work. After that, sell, sell, sell.
I need a drink.

I was with you up to this point.
I struggle each week with several shots. I usually have the easy, middle of the road shot..perfectly exposed, perfect focus, nice color, not too hard to figure out.
Then I have the red headed stepchild photo. The focus is a bit soft, it may be a bit underexposed, it may be a bit obscure in regards to the challenge.
But you know, that red headed stepchild photo has character. It will stick in your memory long after the technical photo has joined the pile of other technical photos. Maybe it's because I see so many perfect photos every day in my work...piles and piles and piles of technical perfection and so a few more doesn't get my attention.
Show me the photo with character but maybe some pimples or needs to lose a few pounds ....I will probably remember it more.

Tallbloke, I understood your entry's connection to the challenge topic. I liked it and gave it a fairly high vote. If others didn't appreciate it, that's their loss.
