Are the canon filters any good that B&H sells? I'm refering to their regular UV-1 haze ones. They seem right much cheaper than the ones the camera store near me sells.

Hmmm,
this UV filter bag of worms seems to crop up from time to time.
Basically there are three camps when it comes to UV filters.

First camp believes that you degrade image with any UV filter and don't recommend them.

The second camp believes in using them for protection but only expensive multicoated ones to prevent image degradation (flare, softness, etc)

The last camp believes that UV filters do not cause any (visible) degradation and uses cheap ones for lens protection.

Films may have benefitted from UV filtration but I don't think digital sensors need to have UV filtered out for them.

As for me, I just get the cheapest ones. Except at night shooting at lightsource, I don't see any image degradation even at 100% crop. They are cheap ones from ebay but they are multicoated made in usa models.

Good luck

so what are you going to decide on?
I hate it when posters don't post what they finally decided on, the suspense kills me.
:)

LOL! Acutally, I'm going back to the camera shop (or call them)to double check on their prices for the couple sizes that I need. They have a "buy two get one free deal", so I need to see if that will be cheaper than B&H's canon ones or if B&H will be cheaper. So....to answer your question, I don't know yet! :)

Here's a good place that generally has pretty good prices and free shipping. There clearance specials can be particularly good. Though I didn't price compare for you--just thought you'd want the option.

They also have very good service. I received a cokin filter once that had a mark/scratch on it. I called, they quickly sent me a replacement with a prepaid return envelope.

Here's the site. I have no vested interest, just a happy customer:

The Filter Connection Specials

Note you have to click on the Tiffen filters to see the real price (the one I just clicked on was 1/2 of what it said in the table).

Here's their clearance page

I buy these generic S&W multicoated UV filters from a vendor named American Eagle Filters on ebay. Good cheap UV filters

When buying filters, don't forget that you can buy step up rings for under $10. They allow you to purchase the largest diameter filter that you'll use, and the ring has threads for a smaller lens size. That way , you only have to buy one size of filter.

Yes, thanks! I did know about that from a friend of mine from here. I've already got one step up ring but I'll need to get a couple more because of some different size lenses now. Great way to save! :)

I like using the Hoya HMC UV(n) Filters. You can find them really cheap on Ebay ($10 each with shipping for a 58mm and 52mm) and they work great.

Yeah, I like those too. I've got a Neutral Density filter and a circular pol. filter and then some uv ones mostly for protection.
