That wasn't unexpected, and I always avoid buying from most of the NYC internet retailers, but certainly "informative" to anyone considering them as dealers. Of course, operating out of a UPS store box doesn't mean that you are not a good internet dealer, but purchasers might want to consider it as far as long term "support".

I'd I'd pay more attention to thier long term online rating then what their storefront looked like.

Yep..your credit card # going to those shops is a bit on the risky side.
Listen..anybody thinking of using the internet has lots of good choices..why take the risk at thses places is beyond me.
I use Penn Camera in Washington D.C. They have half a dozen stores, many in established suburban shopping centers around D.C., and they are one of the largest if not the largest supplier to the Washington D.C. area press corp.
I learned of them when I was working for The Washington Times and they are awesome. The best. And they are also internet price competitive. Nice return policy and very informative photographers work there. Plus, they don't close for weeks at a time :-P (Sorry B&H...lost about $10,000 in business from our company in October)

So your point is that these are dishonest, fly-by-night "businesses?"
Tell you what: start a thread on this site entitled something like "B&H Sucks," add the photos of their locations, and imply that they are a dihonest, fly-by-night business. Care to guess the response?
BTW, I freely use a credit card on the Internet with abandon and with absolutely no fear. |

I think the poster was referencing the 95% of the businesses that look like drug dealer locations more than the B&H and Focus Camera stores.
I think B&H and the like are big enough that even if someone posted they "sucked" they are big enough to take it :-D
(BTW...B&H doesn't suck..they are often times one of the few places you can even buy certain types of gear and pro lighting...but they are getting a bit monolithic in their behaviour)

That may be, but the poster has not made that clear. Even further removed is the author of the photo site that is linked to. What were his intentions...or hidden agenda?
In any case, this is tarring with an awfully broad brush. There is no way for the viewer to distinguish the legit from the rip-off.

It's like it always is anyway...Buyer Beware.
I'll say this though. I work for a company that buys a lot of gear. We buy from people you can put a name and a face to.
If the average new camera buyer would go to a local camera shop and give them a chance to win your business they probably would be happy to try and meet prices on some expensive lens or camera body and then you would have a resource.
Of course not everyone lives an hour or less from a camera dealer. I drive to Washington D.C. once a month (3-1/2 hours one way) and I usually save my larger camera buys for that trip just so I can actually see the gear I am buying and talk to the guy selling it to me.
My wife has that "25 cents less per pound of chicken" search mentality that causes her to go to Wal-Mart and fight the crazy crowds. I like the guy that is a mile from my house and says "Hey Scott, what's up" when I walk in the door..even if I pay 25 cents more a pound for chicken.
Different strokes :-)

If you feel like that's an unfair conclusion to draw, try checking out some of the businesses at ResellerRatings.com and see what kind of correlation exists. It's much easier to present a professional website than it is a professional storefront.
If a thread was started about B&H, sure, people would stick up for them because they've had positive experiences with them. If anyone has had positive experiences with any of the stores pictured in that thread, I'm sure they could do the same.
How you use your credit card is your own choice but that doesn't mean it's a good one.

Tried that and were not even remotely interested. Went to several in the area. One did get a 20D "in special" but would not put in a battery for me to start it up (why bother - I suspect it was for window dressing); One lied flat out about having a 17-40L for me to touch (I could see the thing behind him but I guess I didn't meet the standard to touch it); One made up answers to whatever I asked (sometimes people ask questions they already know the answers to - particularly when looking to buy several thousand dollar equipment).
I was forced to order blind (from internet reviews e.t.c.) so this is the ONLY way I do it now - seriously, they have lost me as a customer basically forever. It's not just cheaper prices hurting bricks-n-morter stores but pathetic sales staff. |
