Where is the best place to do this....I had one done on my smugmug....but it was dark.

I use Shutterfly.com. They do a good job. But you can also use DPCPrints.

If your smugmug picture was dark, it may be because you processed it using an LCD monitor, which can be too bright. The picture will look brighter on an LCD than when printed.

I have an LCD monitor and my prints look the same on paper as they do the monitor.

I use White House Custom Colour (//whcc.com).
Before you can establish an account (i.e., do business) with them, you must submit up to 5 images from which they will make 8x10 test prints...free. The point is that you compare these with what you see on your monitor, and make corrections.

The real key is to calibrate your monitor. Mine is calibrated and I am quite pleased with the prints I receive.

There is a minimum order of $12...11x14's are $3.95, postage included.

That sounds like a good idea. It's probably cheaper for them to do some comparison free ones than have people send prints back all the time because their monitor isn't calibrated and don't like what they see.
I'll have to look at their website.

All the prints I have made so far have been dead on to my LCD monitor. Of course they are done at(gasp) wal-mart one hour. I have spoken to the manager of the photolab there and she thinks the onehour stuff is better than when she sends them to the lab. I have been pleased with the pics they have made. Plus because they know me now..I think my pics get a little more attention.
I would like to find someplace where I can get the good quality at a fair price.
And to be fair to smugmug...i sent them an email and they responded quickly and will reprint the bad ones. They even made some changes on the pic to make it better. I didnt like the pic...but this boys mom wanted it in an 11x14. Where the face is kindof blown out I edited out the shadow from his glass frame. When the pic came back....you could see a white line where I edited it.

While I love the mpix.com quality, I love the DPCPrints as much and the larger sizes are so much less expensive than mpix. Mpix's prices are better than DPCPrints on the 8x10 and smaller sizes. But I'm pretty exclusive with DPCPrints now, because I like using Discover and can't do that at mpix. One more thing that has me sold on DPCPrints - for my $25 yearly fee, they never threaten to remove my photos. Mpix gives a person six months and if he/she doesn't order something, anything, they remove the photos that have been on there that length of time.

Try iprintfromhome.com. They're fast and their quality is second to none. I've had several 11x14s printed by them - they're good!!

(Oh, and if you do try them, please use my name so I can get a discount. :-)

If you are a member of Costco, I've had good results at my store, and their prices are low ($2.99 for an 11x14, $1.49 for an 8x10).

You can either take the files to the store, or upload through an interface run by Snapfish; enlargements can usually be picked up in four hours.
