DPCs members taught me how to make the nice borders on my photos. However, I now need help with printing them!

Example...I have a shot cropped to 4x6 (my size of choice)
..I add the border..all looks fine
..when I print..some of the border is cut off.
..I'm thinking that I need to "reduce" the size of my shot and then when I increase the "canvas" size for the border, this will bring the shot back to 4x6...which should print correctly...

...well I tried that and my Canon IP5000 is still cutting a little off one side..

Does anyone have an easy solution to this issue? I'll try all suggestions..

Thanks,

KenSkid

You need to enable "center image in printable area" or whatever it is on your printer. You can also, on some printers, use "resize to fit paper" or some such to let the printer make smalla djustments as needed, though this is not a good way to fit, say, an 8x10 to 4x5 paper; for large changes ihn size better to use photoshop.

Also, one thing to establish is the proper size of the photo required for a certain end size. It is not always dpi*length or width.

This is for example the profile of the printer used by Costco

You can notice that e.g. 5x7 @ 300 dpi is not 1500x2100, but 1535x2149 pixels. I learned the hard way - first my borders were cut off, and then I went and RTFM.

Since you are using Canon IP5000, it may be possible to find this info for it.
If not, you can print a rasterized photo and figure out for yourself what is the actual required size.

good luck!

I make my initial crop 1/2" smaller. For example, from my original camera file I will make a 7.5" x 11.5" crop (8x12 would be the same dimensions as the original file, so I don't really lose much) and then I add a white 1/2" border around that crop. I use the border for photo info and my copyright (it will be hidden behind the mat). The 1/2" border gives me a final image of 8x12".

Same for a 5x7 print. I crop to 4.5 x 6.5" and then add a 1/2" border...giving me a 5x7 in the end.

something else to keep in mind. When adding a border for print, if you add a symmetrical border, unless your print is 1:1 (square), you will be slightly changing the aspect ratio.

In your 4x6, you will have a 1:1.5 aspect ratio. If you add a 10px symmetrical border to a 4x6@300 (1200x1800), your aspect ratio will be 1810/1210 = 1:1.495. If the border is 150px (1/2 inch@300dpi) it will be 1:1.444, so when printed, some of the longer edge border will be cut off.

all based on theory/math....not direct experience. As pointed out by others, there may be other considerations to factor in.
