Some people must have some great scores.
I'm close to 6 and there are so many better shots up there.
Another 6 would be great though so .................. |

Folks must be in a generous mood. I kept staring at my entry, trying to decide whether or not to pull it. I was concerned it wouldn't break 5. Fell asleep, missed the chance to withdraw it.

I must say ... the whole smoke stack scene started to wear on me ... many many many with exactly the same "smoke flowing, long shutter speed, factories" Yet somehow I still found I was giving 8's and 9's to some of these .... for that I say WELL done! |

My score on this challenge has been a wild ride. About every third challenge I try to do something different. I hate to use the term âtaking a riskâ because to me that is just a big qualifier. On these challenges where I try these new things I still think they are decent photos, but they run on the edge of the theme, or they are a weird interpretation, or whatever. In theory it is fun and a great growth experience to try this, but I must say watching the scores can be a little painful. On this one for example I saw my score at 3.8 for a while â ouch. It has since come up to a middle of the road value. As I watch the comments some folks just plain donât like it and others think its âaâokâ. So tonight I get an opportunity to go to a quaint little concert by a very accomplished, but lesser known local pianist that I imagine none of you have even heard of â Philip Aaberg. He is just amazing to listen to, but the funny thing is I found that while he is an amazing composer and pianist, I didnât like everything that he played tonight. At home I continued to think about this notion and it hits me â what song that I love would never have happened if songs that I didnât like were never done? That probably doesnât make sense to you all, but it seems to really be the question for me. So I say to myself, without trying new things, good and bad, and listening to the responses, what great shot might I never achieve in the future? So I take a glance at my sort of crappy score tonight and see that it is still crappy and even dropped a little. BUT, I have lots of new comments. Low and behold one of the comments is from one of my absolute favorite photographers here at DPC and this person was complementary of the photo. That is so great. So with the lack of validation through score, validation through comment is achieved, the self doubt is removed and itâs time to start composing that next shot for the upcoming challenge. Clickâon fellow DPCers as we all take a meandering path to greatness! |

I agree with what you say, pandering to a mass audience never created original and great art. The famous and most successful of artists all took chances and created innovative work, and largely were loathed by the 'average'masses for much of their careers. My biggest disappointment is that I can never think of these 'out of the box' ideas. When I see some of the work done by others here, I can only wish I'd thought of that! I also agree with you that when one person says they like your work, it more than makes up for any low scores, I can have a smile on my face all day. |

Some of the comments just make me want to pull my hair out~
1st: Looks out of focus? What looks out of focus please tell me! I can assure its not, but how am I to know what is outta focus when I look at on a calibrated monitor both at work and home, and I don't see it..
2nd: Looks like the image is tilted? What makes it look tilted, I know how badly tilted horizons go here. I made an overlay grid I put on all my images since I started the challenges to not get the dreaded crooked this or that. If something is tilted in an image its easy to check, place your mouse on the center of where the image starts, use the arrow keys to a different part, this is an quick and dirty way. I sure would conferm that before I knocked down an image. Grrrr! Man I needed to vent!
