Shutterstock is the highest money maker for myself. With the few images I have posted I almost made $30.00 this month. Missed it by 20 cents :(

ShutterStock Just started being my best site as of this month! I make most of my money from Istock...Overall! But now monthly Shutterstock is in the lead! Dreamstime is number 3 on my list and it only makes me half of what the other two sites do! But it all adds up!

It seems to shift constantly - in the last couple of weeks Dreamstime has put on a real spurt and become the runaway highest earner for me, but went through a dry patch before that when it was amongst the worst.

That's the benefit of being on them all :)

Shutterstock the last 3 months has been crazy. I haven't added ONE new image and my profits have tripled since August. Sept was over double Aug, Oct was almost double Sept and Nov was higher than Oct by far!

Recently ...

1. They attended a big photo expo in New York
2. They placed big ads in design magazine
3. They've posted a version of the site in Japanese, are working on a Spanish version right now, and have additional language versions in the planning stages

Yeah - all of which means they are going to rule the micro world for a little while. I love it - whichever one rocks, I'm on them all! Thanks to Melissa's referral links. :)

You won't see much from me til January - but when your referrals go thru the roof - that's me. ;) I'm going to be adding around 1000 to each site right off the top. lol I have soooooo many to go through! :) Wedding stuff too so it sells.

Note: I was on bigstock and canstock already and didn't remember that - so it'll be 123RF and Stockexpert and Fotolia you see my entries.

I found some new stock sites:

//www.areaimage.com
//www.crestock.com
//www.gimmestock.com

Those aren't on your list Melissa - do you not use them for some reason or you didn't know of them?

I don't know of any way to get referral credit on those sites, so I just put the regular URLs.

I am a part of Areaimage and Gimmestock but I don't make any money from them and I have stopped uploading to them

But thanks for the referrals

So i checked out those new sites mavrik. It seems that crestock is in norway :)... me too.

They seemed very similar, and it is about time they allow zip uploads. Anyhow, perhaps i will upload a few shots and see if they are worth pursuing.

I am doing very well on shutterstock, well on I stock and Ok on Dreamstime. I find uploading to Dreamstime very frustratingly slow. They have so many categories that each photo takes ages to categorize. Also they have the disadvantage that you can only upload 1 model release. Therefore if you have multiple faces in an image you have to stitch all model releases together to upload as one image. They are also very picky when it comes to model releases & picture quality. I just had a huge batch rejected as one model didn't have a phone number on the form. What was particularly annoying was that it was a husband / wife thing so same name address etc, just one didn't have the phone so all rejected. Now I have to resubmit the entire batch again from scratch.
I think it is important to consider how much time is involved to upload compared to the returns you get.

I have just uploaded my first batch to bigstock. (On line yesterday 20 images) No sales yet.
I will have to try 123 & see how it goes.

SS $412 223 img

Big $65 126 img
I have to mention that on SS 30% are referals.
All my images were tahen mainly with my A70. Surely paid out the money I spent on it!

First three months on micro-sites I made a total of $90 (four sites)

I pulled ALL of my photos (about 100 images) from micro-pay sites and put them on rights managed sites - here's the result (bear in mind, these are the EXACT same images)

First month - October
one image sold - $350

Second Month - November
Three images sold - $1,500
Got a freelance gig shooting next Friday for another $1,000 ($250 for travel, $250 per image they use - so it could be much more if they like what I shoot)

hmmm - seems like I was selling myself a little short.

I'm an freelance animator/compositor for my "real" job - and I work with ad agencies all the time. They know about the micro sites, and will use them when they need to (no budget) but I'm working for a multi-billion dollar client right now - the agency bought 200 images from rights managed sites for $600 per image to use in all branding for this client (these are images of people with different technology on a white background, laptops, cel phones, PDAs, etc).

The agencies I work with won't even look at a micro site unless they have no money - it's kind of a joke among the Creative Directors who employ me.

If you want to shoot for a living, you can do it through stock - but you have to give yourself credit for what you know, and sell these for the price they deserve.

Look at Tiberius' numbers, $500 in almost a year! Now look at his portfolio - this is an amazing artist - who should be making that much PER IMAGE.

Please reconsider what the market is paying you, and what you deserve to be making -

Thanks! I'm blushing.
I just don't have the time to reconsider and I am happy with the bucks are coming effortless.
Maybe I shouldn't!

Well that is great, I am very happy for you! I am a stay at home mom to a 4 year old with one on the way. I don't have time or the Multi-billion dollar clients to work with. I am very happy with what I make with the stock sites...and if I wanted to take a break my images still make me money. I am making over $500.00US a month right now. So I cannot complain!

Alamy has sold all my images online. I'm with ImageVortex too, but they don't seem to be doing well - I'm not even getting views on my images

Melissa, you were so supportive when I first started looking at this earlier this year, and I'm so amazed by your portfolioi - and the sheer number of images in your stock library. I think about you everytime I make a sale - because you should be selling four times (at least) as much as me, cause you're better at this by a LONG shot!

Don't stop doing what you're doing, just move some of your best sellers to Alamy too and see what happens - I'm convinced you would go from $500 a month to much more. Then you could consider a slow migration, or mass exodus like I did. :-)

For the record, the billion dollar client is my animation client, I haven't sold them any photography. But they bought $12,000 worth of stock from SOMEBODY! That's terrific news for everyone here! All I need is ten clients buying that much from me a year and I'm a pretty happy camper - shooting with much nicer glass! ;-)

I'm looking for the same type of service as Alamy on this side of the Atlantic - anyone know of rights-managed sites that I can get into with less that 5,000 images in my portfolio?

123 RF is a decent site, compared with many new (or not so new) sites.
01/06/2006 01:00:13 PM · #48
123RF has generated a bit for me already, and I just started with them last week. Have about 30 images, and am hoping to see it pick up quickly.
I use Shutterstock, fotolia, Dreamstime, and BigStockPhoto too. With BigStock, I've followed their "Wanted Photos" guide and uploaded a bunch, but have yet to make a single sale. I don't know that I even have a single view. I'm wondering if something funny is going on with that.
Shutterstock does okay for me, but I'm still really new to all this, so I'm waiting for it to pick up as I keep uploading.
Dreamstime just annoys the piss out of me. I have the most earned there (a whopping $3), but they are very tempermental about what they take, and frankly, don't seem too consistant with their accept/reject pattern.
I'm about to start with iStock, but their request for a scan of a photo ID annoys me, so I'm hesitating.

Earnings from 123RF is about double what I get from Bigstock.
01/06/2006 02:31:03 PM · #50
i like 123rf a lot by how good their upload system is. Very quick with no catagories to fill out.
