An idea I had for another sites logo (photograpghy-cafe). Two things worried me, the light and pouring boiling water so close to a £600 lens - any tips?

backlight the steam to highlight it and or hit it with a flash from above
as well close down to have a wider DOF --
ISO 1600 ?? any reason why ?? better to be in the ISO 100-400 region with f16

Why not take two shots? One of the coffee cup, and one of the lense, then layer them, make adjustments, etc... You could even shoot down at a bit of an angle to see the coffee 'in the lense' with a bit of masking.

Carefully glue the mug handle onto the side of the lens, and make sure the water is boiling hot before pouring it into the top. Adding coffee granules is optional. |

what if you used smoke instead of steam ? will that look too different ?
smoke is easy, a candle will do or even a matchstick. |

Incense burns with a nice thick smoke and is easier to control than water vapor. (You just have to get past the gag factor of being in close proximity with it for a long time in an enclosed room.) |

Thanks for the smoke idea, I had thought of it but tried to keep 'real'. Your both right and if smoke looks better then hey, I should go for it :)

I would second this suggestion. I'm not sure what "keeping it real" means in this context anyway. |
