I took this from another thread:
"But the 5D is not all about resolution. It is definitely a cut above in AF performance, and is a joy to manually focus compared to a 1.6-crop cam. As a matter of fact, I feel it's perfectly reasonable to use what I'll refer to as "gestalt focusing" where you expand your area of awareness to most of the frame and watch the focus PLANE move, not watch focus at a point. That's something that Medium Format users do naturally, but few 35mm folks do, and is not really an option with a 1.6-crop cam."
Can someone elaborate on this? Does a full frame sensor make it easier to focus with your eye that an 1.6x crop camera?
Thanks

I don't get this. How can the size of the sensor affect the image reflected from the mirror and onto the focussing screen? - I don't see the link. |

Well, the viewfinder on a full frame camera is considerably bigger than that of a 1.6x crop. Why? I'm not sure... |

Ah, okay I think I get it now... What you see through the viewfinder has to be an accurate reflection of what the sensor 'sees' - So, if the sensor is 1.6 crop, then the mirror, focus screen, and viewfinder will also be 1.6 cropped as well.
Otherwise you'll get a 'full frame' view through the viewfinder, but only the middle piece of the image will be seen by the sensor. - If that makes any sense!
Still doesn't answer your original question though.

I hear 5D's viewfinder has greater magnification than most of other dslrs. Maybe that could be 'it'? |
