Hello, I am wondering if anyone in the St. Louis area goes to the grafton area to take photos of the Eagles. I am not looking for a get together just some advice on where the best vantage point may be, or when the best time to go is. I'd really like to get a few photos of one of the prettiest birds there are. And I hear they come in large numbers there. Also would my 40-150 be long enough and fast enough for this type of shots? Thanks

Shameless bump hoping for some input. We would like to go in the next couple of weeks and would like a good spot to hangout. The Illinois dept of Natural resources. List alot of places. Hoping for one with a great view for Photos.

I made the trip two years ago and got some great shots. If you travel and cross on 367 into Alton if you go south for about 2 miles you get to the locks and there was a visitor centerwith seminar going on relative to Eagles. I shot a few pics there but the lighting was bad. I then went back over the bridge and turned left onto a service road that ran parallel to the river. Found a place to park and hiked out to the river right next to the dam on the west side and got some good shots there. Keep in mind that was two years ago but I was driving up to Perre Marquette yesterday to do a running race in the woods when I noticed at least 20 eagles out on the ice. I think if you just drive north from Alton your bound to see some. As for your lense selection that all depends on the day and where the birds are. I was shooting with a 300 on a DSLR so really a 450 and some of the shots were pretty far off. Although I wouldn't let that discourage you because while driving yesterday the birds were maybe 100 feet off of the River road.

Good luck

Matt-

My husband is from that area and we spent a saturday a couple years back in the Alton area driving along the river. And boy did we see eagles!! I'll have to ask him when he wakes up what the best time of year or area is to see them.

As for equipment, I'd second the longer lenses suggested by sgryan. Lots of the birds will be up in the air or in the beautiful bluffs along the river. I'd say the longest you have would be the best to take, just to be on the safe side.

Good luck with the hunt and let us know how the pictures come out!
