I know there is a way (i think) where you can have an adjustment layer affect ONLY one layer...and none of the other layers below. I know i have done it before but forget how :( anyone with tips???

press ctrl when you add the adjustment layer and check the box which links it to the underlying layer

note: i don't want to use the 'merge down' command.. because then the two layers (the adjustment layer and image layer) become one.

yep th shortcut button on the bottom of the layers window - hold down ctrl when you click and choose your adjustment layer - that will automatically give you a clipping layer

You know, I posted an adjustment layer question a while back and the answer was that adjustment layers affect all layers below it. But riddle me this:

I was working on a recent photo and had a duplicate layer where I was doing burning/dodging and cloning. It had 3 adjustment layers above it: levels, channel mixer (converted to B&W), and contrast. I had a large piece of sensor dust I was trying to clone out, but when I would clone, the tone applied was completely different than what the source appeared to be. I believe this went away when I hid the adjustment layers and tried again.

What's up with that? Is there a better way to go about this?

I'm not sure why this happens but it definitely does. What I do is open the original again and clone on that, then drag all the adjustment layers over. I never tried just hiding the adjustment layers.

i've found that happens a lot if you have "use all layers" ticked while you're using the clone stamp tool. with that on, the stamp seems to try and factor in the adjustments.

turn it off while you're stamping, and it works like a charm. there's probably a more technical explanation for it, but i've been using photoshop for 12 years (eep!) and that's what i do.

Yes, if you clone with an adjustment layer active the color applied will reflect the adjusted values of the source pixels.

I do all cloning with all adjustment layers toggled off. You can aleays flip them on temporarily to see how the retouched area will look with the adjustments.

Ah, I've learnt my 'something new' for today;

- Holding down 'ALT' and clicking on the dividing line between two layers on the layers palette turns the top one into a clipping layer

Bingo! That was it. At least for my current situation.
