I've almost decided to sell my Canon 100mm macro and buy the Canon 500D to use with my 70-200. The reason for this is that I don't do as much macro photography as I thought I might and the 500D would be easy enough to leave in my bag in case I want to. Selling the macro lens would then free up some funds to put towards a wide-angle lens.
Does anyone have any experience of using the 500D with a 70-200? I've heard that the quality is quite acceptable and almost the same amount of magnification can be achieved as with using the 100mm macro. Does anyone have any samples?
My head tells me to sell the macro lens, but my heart, swayed by the glowing endorsements for it to be found almost everywhere, tells me to hold on to it, just in case.
Thank you.

if you take a look over at the macro section of //www.fredmiranda.com there are certainly people using this setup and achieving good results. |

Why not use extension tubes instead?

Isn't the 500D a very expensive option for what it is? The 500D 77mm has a list price of £170 at amazon.co.uk, whereas the Sigma 50/2.8 macro lens can be had for just £25 more than that, and would give you a very capable dedicated lens... |

I've already got a macro lens, but am thinking of selling it to free up some funds. I've seen the 500D on Ebay for about £80 from a Hong Kong supplier that I've used in the past.
