I hate being picky, but many of this weeks photos have absolutely no element of humor other than the title or catch phrase to make the pic funny. Since this is a photo contest and not a "create a caption" contest, I feel many of this weeks photos do not come close to meeting the challenge, even if the photos are good. Increasing the humor effect with a caption is fine, but if there is no humor without the title, the pic doesn't meet the challenge. :o(
anyone else?

How come people who say they hate being picky always are immediately thereafter?
I'm sure mine is one of the one's you want to pick on, and perhaps deservedly so -- it is not a great photo. But the challenge was to present the concept of "Humor." I did that, in a somewhat offbeat way, perhaps using a lesser-known definition.
But, once again, if we are allowed to use titles, then I view the title and the photo as a package deal, and usually create my submision with that consideration. I know others don't feel the same, and that's one of many reasons NO photo gets the same vote from everyone. |

Do you believe in humour?
Last week you sent me this message about the "Stranger in a Strange land" challenge: "well the beach is someplace strange for a watch to be, but the watch isn't really strange... it's a common everday item... just my 3 cents worth... mine wasnt any better"
What mine?????? You didn't have a submission for that challenge!
Humour is subjective...but don't throw mud if your not willing to step up to the plate!

Humor photos without a caption are a completely different challenge. Most known humorous picture that are funny without any text enhancements are often candid snapshots, amusing situations captured knowingly or not. There are locations and situations that are more favorable for such events but you can never know when the miracle will occur. Creating on command, on short notice, a single image that will provoke amusement or even laughter is a real challenge even for seasoned professionals. Just take a look around you at advertising pictures that are meant to be funny⦠|

I know why my photo sucks. I spent more time caring about the Landscape challenge. I took three shots on the humor and picked the best one. I thought it was a funny idea but oh well. Sorry I can't make everybody laugh. |

it's odd becuase there are usually much funnier pictures in the challenges than the crop this week for humor.
i attribute that to photographer's block brought on by the pressure of having humor as an 'assignment'. I'm normally pretty funny (as well as funny looking :)) but even I didn't do anything close to as funny as I could have.

Well personnally I though that some were pretty funny and made me smile (see the (humur' thread).
I usually do not like or make use of the title but personnaly I thing that this week, like for the song titles challenge, the title is usefull.
In my case, the situation/object/whatever on the picture is not funny per se. But the thought I associated with it made me laugh. So i tried, with the title, to put the viewer in the same situation ....
I am doing a 4.8 so probably that was not the 'better' (if any) interpretqtio of the challenge and ths shot might not be good. But I sitill like it! SO .. I am happy with that
and please guys .. for talking about the humour challenge .. please stay nice and ... keep a sense of humour for forums !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On sunday night right after voting started I had a 7.5 with the first 5 votes, then I had a 6.8 before I went to bed. Yesterday all went to hell and now I have a 5.8.
My picture may be funny to some that have seen my subject before, but maybe a lot of people don't even know what it is. I knew that could happen, but still its frustrating to see your score drop that much.

On Sunday night I started with an 8!!! It has been declining ever since, now down to a 5.2... Oh well...I must admit that it was a last minute idea, and execution. Everyone's sense of humor is different. Some things just go over my head. So I can't expect everyone to "get" mine. :-)

Moral: Never, ever, pay attention to the first few votes.
A single ten can skew the average hugely at that point, plus you're seeing the 'happy hour' voters who can't wait to see all the new photos.
Wait till all the miserable gits get going on Monday morning ; )

well mostly I said I hate being picky because I do. But, also I tried to lighten the blow of what I was saying, because while I might be picky on occasion, I am a nice person and I was trying to find a nice way to say what what on my mind. As for the title thing, it wasn't that using the title to add to the humor was bad, but that some of the pics relied only on the title to be funny... taking a picture of a perfectly mundane item and the putting a funny caption to it, doesn't really seem to meet the challenge in my own humble opinion... but obviously others feel different, and that is why there are so many that seem mundane... and then I did end in "anyone else?" I was curious if it was just me feeling as I did.. hope that makes sense.. no offence intended at all... :o)

oh I did step up to the plate.. I submitted a humor photo this week, unfortunately I still can't seem to break the 6 barrier even if it is pretty darned good... :o)
and acctually, I did have a submission last week.. I just didn't get it in on time... but I did post it in the forums for others to see.... here take a look.... original stranger matter of fact mine did not even completely meet the challenge as I saw it... while my object was strange, the location was not except in that it was a stange location to find such an object... either way though, after posting in forums and reading the email you and others sent me back, I went back through the photos and raised some of the scores accordingly.... viola!!!... the forum served a purpose... and asking "anyone else?" helped me to look at the challenege in a different light... unfortunately, my interpretation of this weeks challenge is still where we started... the pic should be funny or at least make you smile without a title, and if the title makes it even better than thats not only ok but great!!! just don't expect a high score from me this week if you took a picture of something completly mundane and put a funny title to it... :o) but, since I am open to suggestion, anyone else have a thought on this matter?

Well .. this week (and honestly I do not think it's 100% because I need it in my case) I think it's valuable.
Humor is as well in shifts between percveption and reallity or because of the context. True the picture could try to cenvey both .. but I still like mine .. with its title !
And by the way .. it's voila and not viola ;-)
PLUS PLUS PLUS .. jeff .. a big thank you for your reply to the post being still calm and with humour ... it's pretty relaxing after some other threads :-) :-) :-)

hey no problem lionelm... we are here, or at least I am here to have fun... :o) last thing I need is to get stressed out at home... work does that enough for me... this is a relaxing and fun hobby... there's no reason we can not share our own opinions with each other even if they are different... as for the voila/viola thing, I was just making a joke... hehe I always say or type it like that... looks like someone was right about humor and how we each perceive it :o)
Pssst (whispering silently): hey drew, hey langdon, I think we need a spell checker in the forums

flashback to the CORPORATE challenge - here's the quote from DPC ...
Take a shot best representing your views of the Corporate World and/or its effect on society
i was hammered into the nether regions of the voting, apparently because my entry would not stand by itself without the caption
lesson = representation & interpretation are purely subjective --- don't expect someone else to "get it" unless "it" is OBVIOUS with a capital you-know-what --- having done that, a title is secondary
so, historically speaking, i have no problem voting down entries that require an explanation
but that's just me (oh, and it's just those people who voted me down, too)

My entry this week is not very funny by itself. With the caption, it is a little funny. With the caption and some Photoshop (against the rules) it's a lot funny. I'm waiting for the challenge to be over so I can post the doctored up image that is funny!

IMHO it's having to _be_ funny.
I would of done better if I had a month to photograph something funny. Seven days is too short..life gets in the way of funny/camera/time. I think the humor challenge was hard.
Who let the dogs out would of done better for this challenge then it did for the song titles.
I failed this week but look out down the road........!!!!!! :o)
Keep on keepin' on!!

I must respectfully disagree with the gentleman from Texas. I found that majority of the pictures were humorous and a few extremely funny. I also think that a caption is part of a photo. If the caption brings out something in the photo for the viewer/voter then I am all for it. I am sure that captions have hurt people in the past so why not help them.

oh captions are fine, even if they aid in the humor... my problem was when the caption is the only source of humor that makes it funny. I suppose my opinion would be easier to explain if I gave examples, but we would need to wait till the challenge was over to discuss individual photos.. :o) I think the captions that have hurt the scores of their photos, are the captions on pics that are the only source that meets the challenge. With the exception of challeneges such as "song titles" that pretty much require a title to be complete.
