HELP!

Suddenly today my camera stopped auto focusing. I'm hoping I put it on a wrong setting somehow. When I press the shutter button halfway to focus, the focus goes all the way in, then all the way out, but doesn't stop in between.

I can't fully press the shutter button. None of my AF points light up and my focus conformation light blinks.

It isn't the lens because I have tried three of them and it is the same.

I can set the lens to manual focus and it works fine but the AF points still don't light.

Please tell me it isn't broken!

Thanks kindly

Faye

Aim for something bright and constrasty in good light and see if you have the same problem. Manual focus should still work, too.

Same thing happened to me about 8 or 9 months ago. The "auto focus mirror" (or whatever the service center called it) had broken. Had to send it in for repair. Cost about $200 if I remember right. Hope this info helps...

Dang, maybe it IS broken. How does one live without their camera long enough to send it in to be repaired :( How long did yours take?

And another question in case someone knows about this.

I bought a 5 year service plan with my camera and just dug it out to look at it. I hadn't even opened it before and NOW I see that it says I have to register the service plan within 30 days to "validate the plan and ensure coverage" Does this mean if I didn't register it it is invalid even though I paid $149 for it?

Ack!

before you send it in, make sure you wipe the metal sensors on both the lens and the lens mount.

(you ask how long it takes for canon service? long enough that it is an absolute last resort)

edit:
I cannot vouch for, but when my lens needed repair, it was still under warrenty from Canon, even though I never registered it was not a problem.

good luck

Thanks Maxi

The service plan is from RepairTech. I just sent them an email asking how to file a claim. I might need that good luck :)

Is this typical with this camera? Because I am thinking of purchasing this camera, but I don't want THESE kind of headaches if it is a common occurance?

Just like with any camera, there is the possibility of malfunction. With DSLRs there probably is a slightly higher chance of mechanical issues, since they are more complex.

It's one fine cam. I have been very impressed to date. I'm not often an early adopter, but glad I was, this time!

Same thing happened to me after I dropped my cam... cost me about $70 I think. I do remember they also fixed some thing on the mirror but as I am BC, don't ask me what. Take it in, it's worth it and Canon Korea did a fab job in 3 days for me. Whilst it is there, service it and ask for focus calibration... Best luck.

Fayepek:
Mine took between 2 to 3 weeks, from the time I dropped it off at the post office to the time it was sitting back on my porch. I don't remember an exact time frame...

However, when I got it back the FIRST time, it was more broken than when I sent it off... The focus screen was loose in the camera, and fell out when I went to put a lens on it. I called canon back, informed them of this fact, and was told to send it back in. For this they took another 2-3 weeks to fix, but agreed to NOT charge me for the second one... :-)

And as for "does this happen all the time" that someone asked. Well, my camera was well over a year old when it broke, so out of warranty, and I had taken, oh, round number about 10,000 shots with it. So I wasn't all that upset that it had let go. I mean, I would have been happier if it hadn't happened, but it wasn't like it died early or after little use after all... I got my money's worth out of it. And it took oh, about another 2,000 or so shots after the repair and was still going strong when I got my 20D. It now sits quietly in a box in retirement... :-)

Well, my 20D went to the shop along with my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. They determined the IS mechanism was bad and replaced it. I received the repaired lens and my camera back. 2 weeks later the camera "died" near completely. (Shutter seems stuck and 1/2 the electronics don't work.)

This being the second incident they send me a UPS shipper ticket. Sent it back, they received it 10:00am November 18th. Today, 10 days later, I was just informed they "processed it as received" and that I should have it back approx. 7 days from now. We'll see. But I've been without a working camera for nearly 2 months now and am disgruntled. (Albeit, I love the camera...just do NOT like Canon's customer service.)
