I thought about using this for the free study, but came up with something else....
How do you think this would have done? |

I don't think this would do especially well in a free study. Prejudice against "cute" and all... The tonalities here are lovely, though. If I were to pick nits, I'd mention three things:
1. Cropping is awakward, with her chin right in the middle and the top of her head oddly truncated.
2. The few visible fingers of the hand are disconnected and awkward.
3. The offset of upper and lower teeth is strange.
Nevertheless a vibrant and appealing shot :-)
Robt.
Edit to add: I myself have an "unusual" (for me) shot that I am chickening out on entering. I'm holding it in reserve for the "best of 2005" in case I become miraculously more courageous in the interim :-)

I see it as a subtle shot, that would steadily increase over the voting period finishing in the mid-lower-6's. Probably not a winner, but a sleeper favorite among many. Agreed about tonal range. I find the crop to be dynamic leaving the viewer hesitating to look a second longer. One to save for sure.

I myself thought it would be a low six thats why I decided not to use it
but if I compare it to an old free study pic of Amanda I think its at least a whole 1 better......
it show she has grown as a person and me as a photographer (I hope)

I'm not sure I'd agree with that analysis. This shot has a lot of spontaneity, life & vibrance that no doubt served it well in the voting. The more-recent shot, while technically superior, is more of a "study" and they don't do as well with voters usually.
