Maybe I've been living under a rock but.....what exactly are they? Are they transmitters like say the Canon ST-E2? I'm a little lost when it comes to that so any explanation will be appreciated :)

st-e2 work by Infrared. PW's are radio slaves meaning they use radio frequencies. you dont get ttl with PW's, but you get the best reliability .
