I have been researching a couple of AF 50mm lenses and am trying to locate information on specific years of Japan lenses. Neither lense (50 f/1.8 nor the 50 f/1.4) are "D" lenses so I believe that makes them prior to 2002. Both were manufactured in Japan. The f/1.4 has a hard focusing ring with a window for distance (which I think puts it around 1986). The f/1.8 has the focusing scale (no window) and since it is made in Japan it preceedes the China manufacturing dates (so after '86 and prior to '02).
Can anyone direct me to a source for more specific information on these lenses and how they might differ from current products. I am most curious of what the "D" means on newer lenses and the f/1.4 has a depression button on the aperature ring whilst the f/1.8 has a slide lock.
Thank you for any help.

thanks.
Also found this site. It indicates that my f/1.8 is an "N" series circa '90-'02 (likely 90-96) and my f/1.4 is circa '86-'91.
