Hey, It beat out the Dark Lord of the Sith!
Not a bad shot at all IMHO. One thing I noticed is that it seems blown out in between your index finger and thumb. Other than than clean, well lit shot. I think we were just up against some tough competition in this round my friend.

What are you talking about? This took its place as your third best scoring photo, just behind the butt duo. ;-)
Didn't vote, but probly a 6 from me. Seems like Camera Equipment related images don't go over too well, but I don't know if that's always true.
It is slightly overexposed as you indicated - that might have cost you a little. Seriously though - it is now your third best which means you are improving - look on the positive side! :) |

I gave it a 7 on high technical merit. I think it probably didn't have the "dramatic" light most were looking for. |

I think most voters were looking for a more dramatic utilization of a single light source. It's a competent image, but the way you lit it produced an omni-directional sort of light, and probably defeated the purpose of the exercise in most voters' eyes.

Ditto to what Bear and the Doc said as well. |

Thanks guys, I did consider that... right before I submitted it. I did have fun shooting it... I have 136 exposures to prove it... lol
Art Roflmao (i'm not going to be able to get over that name), thanks for pointing out it's my 3rd highest rated photo. I thought it was a better shot than the cig duo :-) but I suppose it didn't fit the challenge as well as those did.

Hey I just noticed that the first butt image...
...was for the New Years Resolution challenge, and the second...
...was for the Garbage II challenge at the beginning of November.
So what I've brilliantly deduced from this is that you never did quit smoking - you just switched brands!! LOL |

LOL!
Suggestion for this New Years Resolution: No more pics of cigs. ;-)
Try something with smoke. :P |

Why don't you just go ahead and quit smoking. You know it woulkd be good for you in the long run. And you can acheive both resolutions -- save money and no more pics of sigs. dpc'ers will be a support group.
As for your image, I would not say it sucked. Actually, except for the overexposure it is quite good. I know you did the overexposure intentionally but I just think you went a little too far with that effect. You've lost the left side edge of the lens, and the color in the pinkie finger looks a bit off from the rest of the hand. Your score may have suffered a bit with the bible bullie bloc for it's title. And, as bear pointed out, the fact that you used only one light source is not the overwhelming first impression when a person views the shot. Probably harder to produce such a shot doing it your way, with reflected light and all as opposed to multiple lights, but the voters were not hit over the head with ONLY ONE LIGHT.

I don't get this. What relevance does another image have on voting for the image you are currently evaluating? Doesn't each stand on it's own?
With this method of thinking it has to be very difficult to vote on a challenge like 'Cheater!' with so many similar compositions.
Of course in the 'Cheater!' challenge it may be easier to grasp this line of thinking since there are MANY similar images...but if there's only a couple that are the same, as in the case of the image starting this thread it shouldn't be an issue at all. JMO.

I believe he was saying my image didn't stand out enough on it's own. And, I appreciate that kind of criticism. Trying to eventually get a ribbon here and that kind of info is valuable.
Personally, I try to vote on every image as if it were not part of a large group of similar photos, but I'd have to admit I am influenced by the photos surrounding it.

I never said I didn't vote on them their own! I just said on the original pass through, this one and another came up right after each other. What really bugged me about it was the thumb, the look and the lighting on it. |

It seems to me only natural that if there are a large number of similar entries, the first vote becomes in effect a "baseline" vote for those images, and the others will get ranked against it, in the sense of "better/same/worse". I don't see a problem with that, myself. It seems very consistent to me.

I like to view the thumbs and see what catches my eye ... vote on those photos, then go back and vote on the others... and yes, I'd have to say those first votes on the ones that stand out in thumb view do kind of give me a baseline.
After I'm done voting, I often go back to the thumbs view and rethink several of my votes and make comments on those I think I can make a decent comment on.
