| im working on getting a studio type setup and wondering what type of background material to use? where to get it? how much to get.. |

Muslin ... it's what everyone uses, besides paper. I buy mine at Walmart. Usually about 5 yards of 90' wide Muslin. Cost about $30. You can dye or paint it however you like.

I'd like more info on the dyeing/painting thing...I got 4 yards (12') of 108" muslin at walmart ($17) and my attempt at dyeing was less than spectacular...i now have a large olive drap piece of muslin ;) as seen here
I have more green, some black (to make it darker?) and yellow to kind of mottle it...i am willing to paint it, but I am not sure if the paint will survive transporting it...and should it be rolled (HUGE) or balled up. I kow you ball up the dyed kind.
Ya know, if i'd have wanted an even dyd job i'd have never been able to do it! LOL

If you look around you can buy painted muslins almost as cheap as make them. But do be careful, really thin cheap ones aren't worth the money. Ebay is a great resource, also look at the sales at Amvona.com

One that I screwed up royaly, I revived by using latex house paint leftover from several rooms in my house. A carwash sponge (big) used like a stamp and dabbed all over the bg with diff colors till I got something that would work.

that's plan B. I orginally dyed it outside, but that option is out now it is snowing and in the 20s. This thing is HUGE, and i'm afraid working on it folded will leave a line that will show when used. I was gonna sponge on dye and let is sit a long time. I think i hurried things the first time.

Latex paint works wonders ... I water it down some before I use it.

Yes, it's in Fabrics... Dye will be found near the bleach and washing detergents... Latex paint is in Hardware :-)

Yes, it's called Muslin (just ask your associate for it.) It doesn't matter if you get bleached or unbleached.
I hang mine on PVC. I had a friend sew loops at the top that the PVC goes through. IF you can't get it sewed, just hot-gluing the top seam over will work.

www.primomart.com we have various widths of muslin by the yard, and also canvas for backdrops if you're intersted in painting your own.

Our studio backdrop is black velvet (NOT the polyester one) on a cyclorama (curved pice of 1mm MDF sheeting)
It's only a small setup for still life, am working on the extensions so we can fit cars, boats and aircraft in it. Not:)

I just got three 6x9 muslins from Dreammaker (ebay store) and wanted to say that they are fairly great for the price. I paid $30 for all three! That's about 160 feet sq. coverage for $30. Can't beat that!

You must mean 2dreammaker.
Also backdropoutlet has some good painted stuff
