According to B&H grey market are made on the same line as the US imports, they are usually cheaper because they don't carry the same warranty.

Check it out:

You try sticking a magnet to it? The textured black does have an almost plastic feel to it, or try biting it, shouldn't leave a mark!

I don't think I would want any magnets near my cam. My teeth either.

ADGibson is right, grey market and "normal" ones come off the same line. It's just the difference in warranties, which is not insignificant :-)

Just to be clear. Grey market products are identical. Ccompanies charge different prices in different countries just because they can only charge what that particular market will bear. That plus variances in exchange rates result in relatively wide variations in prices between countries over time opening up grey market import opportunities.

The reason the warranties are different is because the manufacturers are trying to discourage grey market imports because it hits their bottom line. The warranties are not the reason for the price difference.

Companies will also argue that they provide higher levels of support etc in higher priced countries. This is all hogwash. Basically multinational companies charge whatever they can get away with in different countries and then try to put in schemes to minimise arbitrage between countries.

This happens in every sector not just cameras and I'm not suggesting it's right or wrong - just explaining the way it is having spent many years advising multinational companies on just these sorts of issues.

PS - sorry for the hijack and enjoy your 20D - wherever it came from.

thanks for your clarification on what grey market means. I guess it's just a texture thing with the body feel that threw me into an unnecessary panic.
