I bought mine from BuyDig and it's pretty good. US Warranty as well. Take it to Ritz Camera and compare it with the bodies they have over there.

You sure you didn't get a 20P? The 'P' stands for plastic...

Magnesium :D I do like the weight and feel of it. BuyDig is a reputable store so I'm surprised you have issues with them.

20D has textured, rubberized plastic over the metal on the grip area; is this what you're feeling?

I agree the thing sqeeks a little (until I got the grip which is much worse that is - now I think it's ok).

as far as I know, NO ONE makes full metal bodies an more. usually high impact plastic over a metal frame.
11/22/2005 05:35:51 PM · #12
do you both have the same lenses mounted on it? everything needs to be exactly the same because partly it's also the weight you feel too ;)

I purchased my gear from buydig as well. No issues at all. Is there a shop near by that you could take your gear in and compare side by side?

I think you better send it back. If the camera you got is really like a 350D then it's not a 20D. Best to return it now and not have to worry about feeling bad because you kept it when you weren't sure you liked it. Save up a little more and buy a 5D. No, wait, - 5D is even more like a 350D. Save up a lot more and get a 1D Mk IIn. That one won't feel like a 350D.

no...it's NOT a 350D. the body just feels like the same material.

Most people are falling all over themselves in love with it when they get a new camera. If you aren't completely happy with it now, you really ought to send it back. Semi-pro level DSLRs are not the right camera for everybody.

I'm really starting to think it's just the rough powder coat or texture that is making it tough to distinguish the plastic from the metal. the flash housing and the CF door definitely feel diferent than the rest of the body. maybe I'm just paranoid, but the texture definitely feels different than what I remember feeling before.

other than that it works great.

yes because they're plastic housings and compartments as I mentioned ;)

Rikki hit on a major perceptual point... you unconsciously factor in the weight into your judgement. The 20D is a relatively light camera, and that plus the coating makes you think "WTF?"
FWIW, the 10D and 5D also have the same surface "feel" but are quite a bit heavier, and thus the user's overall perception is quite different.

Didn't you pick one up and try it before you purchased online?
11/22/2005 06:00:28 PM · #22
yes....which is why i am saying it feels different.

Well, the acid test is, shoot something, transfer the pic to the 'pooter, and look at the EXIF. If it sez 20D, it's a 20D. I can't imagine someone going to the trouble to counterfeit a casing to make one camera look like another.

I know when I go back to the 300D from the 20D you really notice how plastic the 300D feel, but not the other way around.

I'll try that comparison to the 300D tonight. I know it's a 20D though. I just wanted to know if I got some kind of Asian import grey market version that had a cheaper body.
