Hi there,

Here is my dilemna, it's pretty simple but I can't make up my mind :

Either I upgrade my D70 to the new D200
OR
I buy the new 18-200 VR and maybe a macro lens ?

I can't buy both, don't have enough money, I really wanted to have a real macro lens and try a VR lens for the first time.
But, the new D200 has more Pixels, more focus areas, more interesting features than my D70.

Any advices would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks !

Go with the glass, you can always "make do" with the d70 and upgrade later. If you were to go with the d200 now it would be hard to justify the "upgrade" of the glass.

Glass.

Get the glass....do you really need 10 megapixels? If so, you can get that later....

Is you camera body limiting you in a significant way? If the answer is no, the go lens.

Well, it makes sense. Still, 100 ISO looks nice, maybe 800 ISO much less grainy, that D200 is really tempting.

Anyway, what do you guys think about that new 18-200 VR ?? There's no test available yet but I fear a lot of barrel distortion. Still, the VR II capability is also tempting ...

About Macro lenses ? Should I get the Sigma 105mm Macro f/2.8 ? or the Nikon 60mm f/2.8 Macro ?

I really don't know what to do

I'm buying the D200 probably the minute it comes out for many reasons...

The LCD screen at 2.5 is a big factor and the 10.2mp since I like to take slightly wider shots for extra play and crop in post production. The 11 area focus and 5fps are also big factors for me.

If the D70's not limiting you, as said before...why switch?

The Sigma 105mm Macro f/2.8 is a great lens. Loved by many DPCers, myself included. Can't beat the price.

I'm no expert but a few salesmen told me to avoid zooms that are trying to do too much. I assume making a lens that takes great pictures at all the ranges isn't an easy task.

Wait for the reviews and check the Nikonians site. There are always a few very honest, well educated voices there.

I am in the same situation (D200 or 10-200 & bits), although the D200 is so very, very tempting, at this stage I've opted for the lens. I do have an acceptable selection of lenses at the mo but since my wife grabbed my Tamron 28-200 for her D50 I've really missed the convenience of the range, the only things that let the Tamron down was it not being able to get wide enough (I swapped back to my 18-70 frequently) and it's smaller aperture (then used my Sigma 2.8's) for low light. Clearly the Nikon 18-200 will make life much simpler for me and allow me to get a great many pics that I've missed on previous occasions - I don't see it being a replacement for specifics, but as walk around lens it's a godsend.

Simply, the decision for me was the fact that I need the lens more than the D200 (at the moment) and additionally the price of the D200 will fall much quicker than the 18-200 so it's not like I have to forget about the D200 :)

Since I've lost my D70, I am glad I don't have to make that decision (a good defense mechanism).

I also lost my 12-24 Sigma lens and 15 mm. f1.8. But I still have my macro lens that takes amazing portraits. I also have my 70-200 VR Nikkor lens (defense mechanism-rationalization continues).

Anyway, since I don't hav ethe camera now, I have more time to partcipate in the forum.:))) (geez...can't stop this stupid defense mechanism).

Anyway, to answer the question, I believe you should go with the D200. You have good enough lenses at the moment. I bought my macro lens with the hope of taking macro shots but I ended up using it for portraits. The D200 sounds very promising.

So I was just wondering if you were all pros (e.g., sell your photos etc.) or is photography a "hobby" for you? I'm a newbie, of course, but am enjoying photography & DPC so much that I know eventually I'll want to "upgrade" but it just seems like there's a lot of $$$ to be spent. Camera price alone for D200 is roughtly $1700 and of course there are the lenses, batteries, memory cards, etc. So, my thinking is (to try to justify upgrading) that if eventually one were really good enough to have photos sold, then that camera would eventually pay for itself. Of course, that's a long road of experience and learning from my end, but you know, you gotta justify it somehow. :)

Small chance that I can check both the D200 and the lens out next week when Nikon has a D200 demo day at one of our local retailers. Hopefully they let us handle the stuff.

My main interest is checking out the 10.5 DX and the 12-24. The D200 would be nice, but I already have a perfectly working D70. I'll wait 4 to 8 years before I upgrade again.

I'll let you know what I think of it.
