Ok so I go to walmart today to pick up some things. I see the portrait studio. Here are there prices. $12.88 for 1 10x13 two 8x10 three 5x7 two 3.5x5 and 24 wallets with no sitting fee. How an people compete with that. Granted you only get one pose beu come on. Who will go to a proffessional when they can get pictures at those prices. I hate walmart.

Its all about the consumer. Some will be okay with the generic look of a $2 wal-mart photo and others will demand creativity, originality and a unique image.

Our job is to show them the difference.

I'm a horticulturalist by education. I worked for a privately owned Garden Center that eventually ended up in competition with Wal-Mart. We did not try to compete with Wal-Mart. If you take the battle to them, you will lose. The Garden Center did well and is prospering to this day because they looked at what they did and what they did well and went from there, personal service a big plus. We sold the same products as Wal-Mart but we also sold personal service that extended beyond the initial sale.

Don't sink to Wal-Mart's level. You are a unique individual with unique services and special customer services that Wal-Mart can not compete with. Wal-Mart will not go out to the local "beauty spots" or parks and photograph people. They will not do multiple shots to choose from.

After working for a garden center I went to work as a composition/composition supervisor for a local paper with a large shopper and a lot of advertising. Wal-Mart can not give the personalized individual attention that you can. As that composition person, we did a lot of work with graduation and special editions dealing with children. No one had to tell me when a photo came from Wal-Mart. They all came from the same cookie cutter. Same back ground, same expressions, same general look. It became very boring.

Be an individual and toot your own horn. You know what you are good at and where you beat the Wal-Mart assembly line. Use it!

I never considered them or any other portrait studio as competition. The only way to get a portrait by me is through me. No one can compete with me unless they try to imitate me. I charge a starting price of $350 for a single framed print of the subject. And I get it.
