new photos
TOok me half the afternoon to figure out how to get them from the Olympus Master program to where I wanted them lol. But there are some shots from today. I have not edited anything yet. I'm heading out back to try to catch some shots of our daughter playing with the dogs so I may have more later! |

Most people i know use a card reader to transfer files to the computer. No software to mess wtih at all (in XP anyway).
They seem a bit underexposed to me. Could any one of 20 different settings in the camera though, and not the user at all LOL.
What lens(es) did you get? What's next on your list?

I won't be buying anything for a long time lol. Have to get to know these first- it came with 2 lenses-
Lenses: Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Digital
Olympus 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital ED
Okay I have a cardreader. Do I just take the card out of the camera and put it in the cardslot on the console?
I played around with the RAW settings a while ago, so I guess I'll try the card slot and see how they turned out. |

My card reader just plugs into the USB port, and the computer beeps, when i stick a card in it windows will either ask me what to do, or since i told it a few times, it just now opend a file explorer window. I sometemes drag and drop and sometimes copy and paste. I was told NEVER to use the computer to erase the card. While rare, it can corrupt the card, so i just erase the cards in the camera. 10,000 shots on 7 or 8 different cards on 3 cameras and never had an issue or lost an image so i'm not changin'!
Your camera is 2x crop? So the 14-45 is 28-90 35mm equivalent?
At least your pretty well covered for general stuff. Either do macro or close focusing to be like a macro?

Pro Fate- so is the card reader a separate device or do you leave the card in the camera?

Just plug the camera in. (All?) Olympus cameras register as USB storage device. I have never used Olympus software for anything else than updating the camera/lenses firmware.

Well, you need it to upgrade the camera and lenses.

A card reader is a standalone device that connects to your computer via a USB cable or Firewire connection. It has a slot to receive your card. You take the card out of the camera and slot it into the reader, then transfer the files over to the computer HD.
The card reader may trigger the opening of whatever download/management software you installed from Olympus, but I ignore this; I just do a drag and drop into the destination folder, and I create a new subfolder for each day of shooting. I right-click and drag, and it gives me the option of "moving" or "copying" the files. I just move 'em over and the card's empty again.

Don't uninstall it. The upgrade is used in addition to the software you already installed.
When I installed the software that came with the E-500, I had no problems opening the raw files -but I was using a separate card reader, not from the camera. Keep in mind that a basic card-reader costs less than $20, and it will save your batteries on your camera. In my opinion, a worthwhile investment. And you should be able to find them at and of the office supplu or computer stores. |

so a card reader is separate from the computer then.
This is giving me more trouble then the camera itself lol.
ANd I just made a major booboo. I uninstalled the software but hadn't transferred some of the pics to my album yet so now I've lost those lol. Ah well, gives me an excuse to go back to the park and improve some things! |

A card reader just sets your card up as another drive on your computer, a removeable one. An "external drive". The card reader is functionally "part of your computer" when it's plugged in, but it's a portable part. You can haul it across town and use it to dump files on someone else's computer just by plugging it in. In other words, not only can you READ from your card reader, you can WRITE to it.
Suppose you have a couple hundred pics shot over several weeks in a file, and you want to take 20 of them to your friend. You can slot an empty memory card into the reader, drag-and-drop the 20 files to the reader, then unplug the reader and move the whole schmoo over to the other computer and download the files there.
Uninstalling your software before transferring some of the pics should not have caused you to "lose" anything. If you had yet to transfer them from the card, they are still on it. If you HAD transferred them via the download software to your HD, but not yet transferred them over you a separate album you keep, then they will still be in a folder on your HD. Uninstalling the program should not erase the folder that holds the images.

okay i think i need a computer class now too lol.
I can't find the pics that were uploaded to the olympus master and that is the program i uninstalled. I saved all the ones I really wanted to my kodak files, but there were a couple on there I was trying to choose from for the latest challenge.
I suppose I'll go on the hunt now. |

You should NEVER use the card reader to delete the files
Where did you hear that, I'm interested because that's the way I've always done it and I've never heard that, but now I'm scared.

As far as I'm concerned it's a myth. I have never had a problem with a card, and I always delete from the reader.

Here is where mine were '\My Documents\My Pictures\olympus'
But for some reason, I seem to remember that I might have specifically pointed the pics there. Seems like I was having problems with finding files I had downlaoded through the Olympus software as well. |

I have read that too, but sure where. I read somewhere that you should copy the files from the card to your folder on your hard drive and then format your card afterwards to erase the card. Never just delete the image file it can cause corrupt information to remain on your card and over time that cause your card to become unusable. Check out this site for more information Causes of card corruption or this one Erasing and Formatting a memory card
NOt sure if they answer the question but I found them informative.

I never did install the software, just pluged the camera in or CF card reader. I suggest to help ya in orginizing the photos, set up a new folder, call it My Photos or whatever, then make new folders everytime you get the pictures off the camera I do these by dates(Makes the most since to me.) But Im loving this new camera. My wife says she wishes I played with her as much as I do with the camera:) I tell her want to do some nude shots. That ends that conversation. Anyways heres another pic from the E-500 My kitty |

I still need to figure out how to change the picture size and all on the camera. I wish I had more time to play with it, but having a lil one at home is making it difficult. |

yes the background is a bit busy, I was just messing around to see how it would come out since I'd changed a few things. As you can see she was not thrilled with me taking her picture lol.
Those are some great shots Hyperfocal!
Obviously you have been doing this longer than I and know more because i'm calling for reinforcements for a few lesssons tomorrow lol. I'm reading the manual, but I need some actual hands on help. I'm not a read and learn type of person, I have to do it and have someone show me how. |
