Why is it that people place one word comments...awesome, neat, cool, beautiful, etc...

I know I have done it but I am starting to realize that they are kind of pointless, especially when you get tons of them on the same shot. Can people start to be a little more creative in how they post. I like to receive comments on what they really like about the photo, what I can improve on, etc...a little more indepth comments would be awesome!!!

Yes, those comments ... I have a good number of those myself out of the few cooments I have, only 2 or 3 are useful. I get a lot of Cool! or Cute!

I'm guilty of it myself from time to time, but when it's all ya get, it doesn't really help.

There's no explaining the whys and wherefores of commenting. They just are. We can only hope for a couple of comments per challenge which truly express what the viewer saw.

Not only does it not really help, but it doesn't justify the score you get at the end of the challenge...

But maybe if people become a little more aware of the pointless comments they may give more insightful ones...

I would rather see 2 indepth comments than 30 one worders...

I'm not disagreeing with you, just stating how it is.

How does that quote go...

about knowing the difference between what I have control over and what I don't?
11/17/2005 11:58:46 PM · #9
Oh don't think I was trying to argue with you, cpanaioti...I know how it is, people just don't like to offend others so they don't want to give their true opinion...i just wish they would...

That's a good quote though...

so someone goes out of their way to not only give you a high vote, but to actually move hand to keyboard to let you know, sans anonymity, that they personally liked it enough to give you an extra second of their time and you wanna complain about that?

those who give in depth comments are great. heros even. but don't bring down those who are just trying to give a little extra encouragement along with their vote.

be gracious and grateful.

I agree with that!!! But when you have a low score and you get those one worders then it doesn't really tell you why your score is low

I understand what you are saying, but people will put what they want in their comments. I'd rather have someone saying 'cool' than nothing at all. As kudzu said, we should be grateful that they actually made an effort to let you know. Their is no obligation for people to explain their score to you no matter what they give and I never mention what score I have given in my comments so if someone says 'cool' to me I still don't know if they've given me a 1 or a 10 or anywhere in between!

I don't know if it does any good to complain in the forums. A majority of the no commenters probably aren't reading the forums either.

Guys, I got a question (sorry if its off track!)

I read on some of the challenges thread you guys say:

"Someone just gave me a 2, how could they", while the votes are being cast.

Is it possible to see the individual scores as they come in? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

I gave my opinion to someone once and they said I wasn't polite enough or politically correct.

"Why cuz your model is fat or did the ugly part offend you???" j/k

You work it out by the amount your average rises and how many votes you have recieved, ie. if you have an average of 5.0 and your score goes up to 5.02 and you have recieved 100 votes than someone has just given you a 7. 5.02 - 5.0 = .02 X 100 = 2 + 5 = 7.
You can do it in a spread sheet with a formular.

Well, you're missin' out as a not member :-) , you see, some of us just need to get a life :-P As a member, you get this wicked little thing called an 'update button'. With it, you can click it and get your score updated by the minute. Then, if you do some math, and continually click that dreaded button, you can figure out what the score you just got was. Be very careful, if you get a blue shirt, this terrible dehabilitating disease is highly, highly contagious!

I agree with Makka and KPriest! Sometimes a picture just touches you. Or you look at it and you think its strong enough not to just pass by with a vote and a click. There may not be anything about the photo to complain about -- or they don't feel they need to restate the obvious like, "The lighting is great" or "Great composition", but they want to say something that says, "This photo is better than the average photo I am passing by here. I'm amazed that anyone would have a problem with that.

Anyone who wants to leave one-word comments on my pictures that are postive and encouraging. . . please feel free to do so. It doesn't bug me a bit. :)

It's rare that I have time to vote on the challenges (dialup is just not good for poting on a challenge with 150 participants). When I have done it I've tried giving more than one-word comments on many of the photos. It is tough to do after #20 or so (and I try to pic out the shots that really appeal to me). So you might chalk the lack of comments up to a lack of mental stamina rather than plain sovenliness.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, to me, there is NO such thing as a bad comment :-)

So when you get positive one word comments and a super low score...does that tell you anything on your shot...like how to improve it, etc, etc...
