I got my 350D today (ordered it over the weekend).
I picked up the camera from fedex in the morning because they wouldn't deliver it without a signature, but my 1GB CF card didn't arrive until this afternoon so all I had was an 8MB card to play around with it in town.
Here are three photos from today - the first is straight out of camera, the second is adjusted a little and the third is adjusted and made black/white.

Here's a picture of the camera:

So far I'm liking the camera. I'm pretty impressed with how it does in low light, except for the kit lens... the autofocus doesn't work in really low light, and the aperture doesn't go low enough.
The noise doesn't seem to be too bad at 1600, and I was pretty surprised how fast a shutter speed I could use in decent nighttime outdoor lighting without flash (coming from point-and-shoot digital cameras).

Now I need to buy some lenses... I think I'll get the Canon 60mm macro, either the Canon 28-200 F/3.5-5.6 or the Tamron 28-85 F/2.8, and maybe the Canon 50mm F/1.8.

Is it worth getting the 50mm if I already had the 60mm F/2.8 macro?

congrats on the XT.
I have the Tamron 28-75 and the 50 f1.8 as well. I've tried out the Macro 60 lens as well, so I'm familiar with all of the lenses and I've an XT with a grip as my second camera.

I almost never use the 50mm b/c the Tamron 28-75 is avvery sharp lens at 50mm. Only time I would use it over the Tamron is if I want to use a wider aperature, but this really makes the Depth of Field shallow, so I rarely use it. The 50 mm is a normal perspective lens, so it always feels too long or too short, never right in my taste.

Unless you just one lens that does it all, I'd recommend either the Tamron or the Sigma 18-200, as it cover a nicer range. With the crop factor, you would get no wideangle coverage with the Canon 28-300. Plus these type of lenses are not the sharpest as they have to cover a long range of focal lengths.

If I were you, I'd get the Tamron 28-75 that you are thinking about, use the kit for the wide angle stuff for now. If you want a macro, then 60mm is a good one as well. If you find that you need another lens that covers the 50mm, then I'd consider it. Many swear by it, and it is optically a good lens, but I just don't like the build quality or the focal length. In retrospect, I would have liked a 28mm or a 30mm prime. It's relatively cheap, so if you don't like it, it's not a big loss, so it maybe worth it. It just depends what focal lenght you like to shoot at.

Congrats on the new camera, i love my rebel xt!

Now lenses... definetely get the tamron 28-75 f/2.8 its a really awesome lens. I have the tamron 28-75 and the 50mm f/1.8, and i havent used the 50mm in about 4 months now, so my personal recommendation is that even though the 50mm is relatively cheap if you get the tamron you will prob never use the 50 ever again.
I would stay away from super zoom 28-200 or 18-200 for example because because of their huge zoom ratio you are trading a lot of optical quality. I dont know if this affects what you do or not but for me optical performance is one the most important things in a lens.
Now the 60mm macro, this is a really cool lens, but maybe the 100mm macro is cheaper and better since you dont have to get as close to your subject as with the 60?

Personally I am aiming to complete my lens range with the following lenses -
Tokina 12-24
Tamron 28-75
Canon 100mm macro
Canon 70-200

Price difference between 100mm and 60mm macros is nominal. The working distance is not that much different, either. Measured from the sensor (technically correct) it's a 4 inch difference (8 inches vs 12 inches, roughly) but the 60mm lens is a couple inches shorter, so the lens-to-subject distance difference at 1:1 is just 2 inches or so; not a huge difference.

The real difference between the lenses is in weight and bulk; the 100mm is longer, and it is substantially heavier. So for me the 60mm is more comfortable to work with as an all-around lens; and in its all-around capacity I find 60mm to be a more useable prime focal length than 100mm.

On the other hand, and I didn't consider this when buying, the 28-75mm Tamron goes near-macro, 1:2, and has the 60mm range covered. So I find myself rarely using the 60mm Macro at all, unless I'm actually tripod-mounted and going in more than 1:2; otherwise I'll use the 28-75mm simply for the ease of slightly zooming vs moving the tripod. So in retrospect, perhaps the 100mm would have gotten more "prime use" out of me after all?

Whatever, LOL. It's late and I am rambling... I like my 60mm very much, regardless. Wonderful lens.

Robt.

Just another vote for the 100mm macro. If you get the Tamron 28-75, then the 100mm, being slightly longer, may be useful as an addition (I'm not really convinced that one needs too much overlap). In addition, the 60mm is an EF-s lens, so with future upgrade paths in mind, the 100mm, being a full-frame lens might be a better bet on that score as well.
