What are you seeing that you think is wrong? The top one just looks slightly out of focus, the bottom one just seems to have a narrow DoF which appears to be focused on the hand.

I really like the guitar image. It would look great in black and white. I think the depth of field is perfect to bring the viewer's eye to the hand and strings.

For me personally, the candle image is not that interesting.

I agree with Alienyst. Both shots are pretty good. The candle could benefit from a faster shutter and better focus. The guitar shot is good as is, but could be beefed up with some PP.

Switching to an SLR from a P&S is like learning a new language. You feel all lost at first but gradually things start to get clearer.

The candle image is too bright. The whole point in taking such pictures is to make them look soft and romantic. Not to show details of the candles themselves. Unless you are selling candles ;-)

The guitar image is very good. Better focusing and it will be excellent.

It is a bit bright, but with 4 candles in the shot I figured romantic was not what they were going for.

I think your guitar shot is great - You got the focus on the hand, which is right in my view. This shot might look better from the other side, with the focus on the players left hand. You would also get the other, strumming hand, in the background (Yes it will be out of focus, but it might add to the effect...)

There's nothing wrong with the focus on the guitar shot. Not only is the hand in focus (as it should be) but the strings and fretwork directly under the hand are in focus as well. There's arguably a DOF issue, but that's an aesthetic call. Some might prefer this shot stopped down a stop or two so there's a larger zone of sharpness.

It would help if we knew what lens you are using and what f/stop it was set at.
