I'm looking for a backdrop stand and on BH they range from $70 to $300+. Can anyone recommend a decent general backdrop stand........don't need anything fancy. Won't be transporting it anywhere, just for use at home. Are the $70 and $80 stands pretty cheap or are they a good starting point............or are the stands in the $120 range worth the extra $40? Thanks!

I got this and when I researched 2 months ago, it was the best for the $$. It holds up to a decent amount of weight and doesn't bend down at all. I love it. Pick up some clamps when you get it tho.

I made my backdrop stand by using 20mm pvc piping that is normally used for reticulation. I just bought some joiners to go with it and it all just fits together and comes apart when I need it to. I also bought 20mm hose clamps to attach the backdrop material. It's all very portable and pretty stable too. All up it cost me about $20 to make!

I've had this one for 6 months or so and am REALLY happy with it. It comes with an awesome carrying bag as well. I have no regrets.

This sounds great. Just what I've been looking for.
Can you tell me how you keep it standing up?
Have you made some sort of footing or base for it?

Cool. I'm about to head home from the office. I'll look in again once I get there. Thanks in advance. :)

OK! Not the best pics but it shows you what is going on. I got these from Bunnings (Don't know if you have them there in Victoria but it's just a hardware store). The piping comes in 2 meter lengths so just buy as much as you need.
This shows the stand with the backdrop fabric half hanging off. My stand orginally started off only half the width it is now but it was easy to extend.
This shows the entire stand without the fabric.
This just shows how I did the feet. They are just standard pipe attachments to suit the size pipe (20mm). T pieces etc.
This shows one of the 20mm hose clips I use to attach the backdrop to the frame. They just clip on and off easily.
Another angle of how I've done the feet. I will get around to add another foot to the middle of it one day!

If you're using really heavy fabric you may even want to extend the length of the feet a little. Very easily done. The blue fabric I've shown here is actually curtain fabric with the backing on it so it's quite heavy and it holds it up very well. The only bits I've glued together are the pieces for the feet. I just used PVC pipe glue. The rest I can take apart as I need to.

This is really done on the cheap but it does work well! Hope this gives you some ideas!

And this is a shot done with the finished product! :)

Hey thanks for taking the time to shoot and post this. The stand looks ideal for my new little studio/office. The feet are so simple. We do have Bunnings here in Victoria and I'm going there tomorrow morning to buy some pvc piping and some joiners. Looking forward to building myself a stand

:)

Thanks Again.

No dramas! If you make it as big as mine make sure you put another length of pipe in the middle to help support it otherwise it'll sag in the middle. Have fun. It only took me about half an hour to make it!

Two options...
In my home studio i have hooks in the ceiling and use PVC pipe heng between them - $5 or so.

I needed a portable solution for the holiday pet portraits I am doing on location this month and my solution was to take the bottom part of this stand and stick in a vertical piece of PVC, using a cross piece to make a mount for the two arms (of pvc) and then a short pice sticks up and gos to a couple of 90 elbows to give me a boom mount to mount a flashgun above and behind the subject. Cost excluding the stand, $5, with stand $25 (bought on sale at sears). I still have the hot lights and stuff if i need them.

Amvona.com has decent stuff. if you watch on ebay you can get it cehaper sometimes - they have 1 and 3 roll holders in 2 widths, figure $150 give or take although you might get lucky going into the christmas season. I have quit selling on ebay till february becuase it all turns to xmas and folks get busy with brick and mortar shopping and non-xmas items just don't sell for much online (great if you're a buyer!)
